CNET has a handful of laptop recommendations for 2026.
Today’s pick to show case is...
The Dell XPS 14. Another great do-it-all Windows laptop from Dell, this computer is another banger from the company after a previous great year. This laptop corrects many of the Dell 14 Premium’s errors, while designed at a reasonable weight and retaining a solid, well-built chassis. The XPS 14 delivers a stronger overall performance and contains a longer battery life that lasts up to 21 hours. This laptop is highly recommended for creators or other power users who want the power and style of a MacBook Pro in a Windows laptop.
Key Pros
• Quiet and cool operation
• Strong performance with long battery life
• Sleek, solid design at a reasonable weight
• Quad speakers and huge haptic touchpad
• Physical keys have returned to the function row
Key Cons
• Matches the MacBook Pro in price, but not performance
• Keyboard has seams along the edges and below; magnets for debris
• Limited port selection with no adapter included
• No fingerprint reader for security

Cyberattacks. They occur anywhere and at any time. These attacks are often viewed as financial crimes, due to organizations losing access to critical systems, operations brought to a halt, and attackers demand ransom money.
In the present day, ransomware has evolved into something far more dangerous. The pool of targets have increased, and now organizations in healthcare, emergency services, or critical infrastructure could also become victims.
Potential victims in medical fields fear that an attack can scale to a “ransomware death”. A “ransomware death” is a situation in which the attack contributes to or is associated with the loss of human life by disrupting essential services.

For example, in September 2020, the University Hospital Dusseldorf in Germany was hit by a ransomware attack that disabled their critical IT systems. It was so bad, emergency patients who needed urgent treatment had to be transported to outside facilities; some critically ill patients died due to this interference.
Healthcare organizations are targets of hackers and ransomware groups because of how they rely on electronic records and equipment to keep records of patients and treat said patients. Even a small amount of temporary downtime can delay critical operations such as surgeries and emergency care.
As ransomware attacks evolve, other organizations such as government offices and school district offices can become targets to. Sure, they may be more difficult for hackers to gain access. However, if they do gain access, their actions can affect thousands of people even in a small amount of time.

Ransomware attacks are not just an IT problem. Attacks are not just about hackers stealing files or leaving victims with financial loss. The consequences can extend into the physical world and affect hundreds, or even thousands of people. Therefore, preventing attacks is not just a business priority; it is a matter of public safety.

Are you going on a business trip? A trip where you will need to stay at a hotel, and attend an event in a conference center? Or rather, are you going out to a similar venue for just one afternoon? Regardless, be careful if you are planning to use a public Wi-Fi spot.

ReliaQuest, a global security operations and threat response automation company, has reported an ongoing campaign from hackers that target such locations to hijack corporate targets and their accounts. The campaign has been active as early as June this year, and remains a threat.

The attack is simple: infiltrate public Wi-Fi locations to steal login credentials from victims when they sign in to use the Wi-Fi for their business purposes.

For expanded details on the issue, including how you may want to take extra precautions, feel free to examine the full article from TechNews World

The world of technology has been seeing significant changes this year. According to the World Economic Forum, the top 10 emerging technologies explores tech at the tipping point between scientific progress and real-world impact. Some of these emerging technologies have already left the lab and are ready for commercial use.

Here are the top 10 emerging technologies of 2026:
1. Everything-to-grid energy: mobilizing distributed assets to store electricity into the grid
2. Direct lithium extraction: a faster, flexible, and potentially more sustainable alternative to traditional lithium production
3. Passive radiative cooling materials: designed to reflect 95% of incoming sunlight to keep surfaces cooler without the need for electric space cooling
4. The breakdown of ‘forever chemicals’: new methods to superheat water, apply electrical currents, or use UV-driven chemical reactions to crack PFAS bonds
5. Precision fermentation: microbes used in food production and for pharmaceutical products
6. Exosome drug delivery: used to treat cancer patients
7. Personalized mRNA cancer vaccines: advancements in cancer treatment
8. Quantum simulation for drug discovery: researchers can better predict how drug candidates will function early on, reducing costly trial failures and treat more complex diseases
9. World models: fields like robotics or climate modelling can predict how the physical world will adapt and change
10. Lattice-based cryptography: a new approach to encryption designed to remain secure in any scenario

For further details on these emerging technologies, you can read the full article here.

Ransomware attacks are not exactly uncommon. They can happen in a variety of ways, but it all comes down to the hackers finding an open window into the system.
Last month, there was a report about compromised logins as the most common entry point for these attacks. The Sophos reported that about 79% of ransomware attacks were traced to an initial intrusion that exploited compromised identities and legitimate user login credentials.
Most of these attacks began with malicious emails. These emails are specifically designed to pose as a legitimate business to trick the victim into sharing their account login credentials with the hackers. These also result in phishing attacks and brute force attacks. In other cases, some attacks resulted in data being stole, and victims had to pay a ransom for the promise of retrieving said data.

Ransomware attack cases are only increasing, primarily due to advancements in technology and AI. Threat actors use AI tools for their despicable schemes to swindle poor victims out of their money.
It is more important than ever that business prioritize identity threat detection and responses, enforce multi-factor authentications across multiple access points, and regularly monitor activities in the system.

The top three trends for new technologies in 2026, according to the World Economic Forum:
1. Increasing personally and tailored to a single patient or a specific context.
2. Solutions are decentralized in nature. This enables solutions to produce food, energy, or raw materials closer to where they are requested.
3. Achieving more for less. Examples include space cooling without electricity, food production without animal farming, and substantially reducing the cost of traditional drug discovery.
