Today, we pause to honor someone whose service lives close to our hearts.
Army Master Sgt. Richard L. Ferguson, beloved family member of one of our own here at Freedom Home Care.
Master Sgt. Ferguson served with the Army’s 10th Special Forces Group and dedicated his life to military service. A career soldier, he deployed across the world, often carrying out missions that remained unspoken, held quietly and professionally, as so many in Special Forces do.
Before leaving for what would become his final deployment, he did something that speaks to the weight of his duty and the reality he understood all too well, he wrote a will and chose his burial plot, fully aware of the risks he faced and unwavering in his commitment to serve.
On March 30, 2004, at the age of 45, he was killed when the military vehicle he was riding in rolled over during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He understood the risks of his calling, yet he lived a full life beyond the uniform. A father, a husband, a history lover, a man who laughed easily, camped with his kids, and spent years tracing his family roots back generations.
His awards and decorations reflect a lifetime of courage, excellence, and sacrifice. They include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, and the Special Forces Tab.
His father once said, “He was military all the way. He did what he had to do.” Those words reflect a truth many families of service members know deeply: courage is not loud. It’s steady. It’s lived.
Today, we honor Master Sgt. Ferguson’s sacrifice, his service, and the family who carries his memory forward. His story is one of devotion, bravery, and love… and we hold it with deep respect.
May his memory be a blessing, and may we continue to honor him and all who have fallen in how we care for one another every day. 🇺🇸
