A potential client recently asked us this exact question. Does this sound familiar? "Our gym pays ASCAP and BMI directly, and our class instructors use Spotify playlists. Is this ok?"
Sorry, you're still not legally compliant.
Here's the gap nobody tells you about:
*PRO licenses (ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/GMR) = the rights to play music publicly
*A commercial music platform = how that music actually gets delivered
Having one doesn't replace the other. The good news? Your instructors can keep their playlists - strength day, conditioning, the Saturday mix. Using our Spotify Playlist Import feature, their favorite tracks get matched against a fully licensed library and can be played in the commercially compliant Custom Channels dashboard.
Have more than one location? You can see what every location and device is playing from a single pane of glass.
The only tradeoff: they pick the playlist, not the exact song order. That's the line between "licensed" and "not."
