Today marks the 94th anniversary of Isadora Duncan’s untimely and notorious death when the hand painted silk scarf tied around her neck was tangled in the spokes of a convertible in which she was a passenger. Considered by many as the “Mother of Dance”, she lead a bohemian lifestyle where she met the painter of this portrait Paul Swan, an eccentric artist, dancer, actor and poet, who blurred the lines of gender conformity and paved the way for many to do the same. He held weekly dance recitals at his studio in Carnegie Hall from 1939-1969.

Paul Swan (American, 1883-1972), “Portrait if Isadora Duncan”, oil on canvas, 1922, 39 x 29 in.

HBD to painter/sculptor William Zorach. This gem of a watercolor was created in Yosemite in 1920, where Zorach spent 5 months painting the gorgeous landscape in his distilled modernist way. He began sculpting full time 2 years later. The now cares for this beatiful work.

HBD to Francis Bacon, one of the Greats from last century and one of my favorites of all time. A riveting figure and practitioner. I recall staring for hours at “Study for a Chimpanzee”, 1957 while interning , and marveling at what makes people tick.

Francis Bacon, “Study for the Human Body after Ingres”, Lithograph on paper, 1984, Private Collection, San Francisco.

Happiest of birthdays to Artist CHRISTOPHER SCHULZ who can make a Bullhead Shark sexy as hell, while simultaneously commenting on echo systems and what us folks choose to acknowledge or ignore in the name of biodiversity. Check out the link in bio.

Today marks the end of the last imperial dynasty in China, the Great Qing (1644-1911). This brilliant piece, a boy’s coat, looks like it came straight out of Op Art. From the wonderful collection at the Art Institute of Chicago
