Conservation is a buzzword often used to describe a noble act like saving the rainforest or washing oil off a duckling. Sometimes, it’s using a saw to mow down your favorite tree to mitigate the spread of an invasive species.

Two years ago we found balsam wooly adelgid (BWA) in Missaukee County and we’re now actively trying to stop the spread while determining its reach on the landscape.

Check out this link for more information:

An internal Michigan quarantine looks to prevent spread of balsam woolly adelgid.

🌲 FROM FOREST TO FUTURE: Part 2 - The Plot Thickens! 🪵
Ever wonder what a forest looks like right after harvest?
Join us Saturday, March 28th (1-2PM) for Part 2 of our timber harvest documentary series. We're following a real harvest happening on local Missaukee county property, and we want YOU to see what "immediate post-cut" actually looks like in the field.
What we'll explore:
🚶♀️ Walk the freshly harvested areas
🪵 Decode the "mess" - logging debris, soil disturbance, and skid trails explained
🌱 Learn the regeneration game plan
📸 Compare before & after - how does it actually help the forest thrive?
This isn't your typical classroom lecture - we're getting boots-on-the-ground with this one! Tony from Fox Forestry will show you the science AND the strategy behind sustainable timber management.
📍 6180 W. Sanborn Rd., Suite #1, Lake City, MI 49651
💰 No Cost
📝 Registration appreciated: missaukeecd.org/workshops or call 231-839-7193
Missed Part 1? No worries - each workshop stands alone, but together they tell an amazing story of forest renewal.
P.S. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy boots - we're heading into the woods! 🥾

🌲 Own forestland? Save on property taxes with Michigan’s Qualified Forest Program (QFP)!

If you have 20+ acres of non-homestead forestland, you may qualify for a 16-mil tax reduction through the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD).

The QFP connects landowners with professional foresters to help keep forests healthy and intact. To enroll, you’ll work with a Michigan Registered Forester to create a management plan that outlines your goals — you stay in control of how your land is managed.

✅ No restrictions on how you use your property

🌳 20–39 acres must remain 80% forested

🌲 40+ acres must remain 50% forested

🏡 Structures are allowed but taxed at the normal rate
