October also marks International School Library Month, with this year’s theme focusing on Libraries, Literacy, and Artificial Intelligence.

AI is changing how students search, read, and learn. School librarians are often the ones helping them make sense of it, and that work matters more every year.

At Augsburg University’s library in Minneapolis, USA, students check out books with James and pick them up from Jean.

James is a self-checkout tablet, and Jean is a pickup locker, both from Bibliotheca. They’re named after James and Jean Lindell, longtime donors to the library that bears their family name.

The change came after three librarians, including the director, took early retirement in 2024, leaving a team of four. The new director decided librarians shouldn’t spend their days checking out books. Today, self-service accounts for 98% of checkouts, and borrowing has grown 5% each year since.

Students can use both in their own language, which matters on a campus with large Somali and Hmong populations.

“It’s meeting people where they are,” says librarian Sara Fillbrandt.

Lynn Yandell and David Lubin had a great time attending the Library Journal Design Institute and touring local libraries throughout the Columbus community.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with library leaders, exchange ideas, and explore the future of library spaces and services.
