New Email Scam Targeting Dental Offices

How the Scam Works

Attackers are sending emails that come from people or offices you know and trust. These emails contain a link that, when clicked, quietly downloads a program called ScreenConnect. ScreenConnect itself is a legitimate remote access tool used by many legitimate companies, including IT providers, for support and troubleshooting. The problem is that attackers are misusing it to install it on your computer without your knowledge. It then runs in the background without any obvious signs, giving the attacker remote access to your computer. The attackers watch and wait for you to open sensitive information and may steal passwords, logins, patient records, and other confidential data.

Why These Emails Are Hard to Spot
Because these emails come from real, legitimate accounts that have already been compromised, they can be very difficult to identify. We have not seen this attack affecting Mac users at this time, though we still recommend the same caution regardless of what computer you use.

A Few More Good Habits to Build In:
1. Never install software you did not request
2. Watch for anything running quietly
3. Lock your computer whenever you step away
