What have we been up to? TLDR; Building a unified semi-automated operations platform for Swan Brewing! More Below⬇️

When I was running the day-to-day operations at Swan Brewing I always dreamed of a unified operations platform that took the "this process lives in my head only and it's manual" and turned it into something that was determinate and repeatable (I know, that's super nerdy). That meant that things that only lived in one person's email, calendar or thought process could be systematized and made available to anyone, anytime the operation need it.

I've spent the last 2 months building it.

✅ Vacations or staff changes no longer impact operations.
✅ Entertainment and Food Truck booking is streamlined and semi-automated with true market analysis available at the Ops Manager's finger tips. No more guessing "are they a good fit?"
✅ Subcontractor compliance is now automated W-9 verification, automated 1099 reporting, automated insurance collection and automated operating agreements. No one can be booked without being compliant.
✅ Taproom staff complete the loop by giving real time feedback on the operation through the Point of Sale system.
✅ Software is the SOP.

Security and data integrity were part of the architecture from day one, not an afterthought.

🔒No personal tax data ever passes through the Swan systems. That was by design. Data minimization was one of the core architectural decisions, but it was also the most tedious part of the build.
🔒Access and security needed to be enterprise grade with revokable access codes, OAuth and role gating as well as every decision being audited with flags presented in the Owner's Dashboard.
🔒Redundant backups systems (on and off server) with heartbeat and dead man switch notification systems implemented so we always know the system is on, running and capturing accurate backups every night.

There were some headaches.

🤬I had over 1,300 automated tests passing when Swan's ops manager texted me at 10:53pm on a Saturday night to say the bar couldn't log the 7pm band, and that the screen kept jumping to the next day. The system was reading the date in UTC and not EST. From 8pm onward it believed it was already the next day, so it refused to record the night that was actually happening.

Bands play in the evening. The one window that mattered was the one window that was broken, and it took a human with a phone to find it. I'm glad we were beta testing it.

The fix was not just the timezone. A taproom's day doesn't end at midnight, it ends around 4am: way after last call and way after the band is paid and checked out. So the software had to learn what a "day" means at a brewery.

cygNET is now working live at Swan. You'll never notice it. Most people won't. It's not sexy or flashy. It's function over form. The time it saves and the operational transformation from "startup" to "we've got our stuff together" is what makes it valuable.

🙋‍♂️Know a bar/restaurant/brewery/event venue that could use a system like this? Share this with the owner and have them reach out. I'd love to see how I could implement this at more small businesses.

Cheers,

Dan

Just launched a complete backend and front end migration for Swan Brewing last night! Now running on Astro 6.x with PWA. While we still have some more work to do on a completely revamped entertainment/food truck/reservation scheduling system for the ops team, we took a little time to add some fun little Easter eggs to really enhance the brewery’s customer experience. Flappy Swan, Sudz Up! and Swan Tapper are live!

What do a carnie kid from Gibsonton and Polk County's entrepreneurship ecosystem have in common?

More than you'd think.

In Episode 4 of Elevate Polk, Dan Thumberg opens with his own story. Growing up in a family that owned a traveling show, manufactured rides, and ran amusement parks, in a town known more for its reputation than its reality. That experience of carrying an unearned stigma frames the episode's bigger question: what does it cost a place when "No Man's Land" becomes its identity?

Polk County has the talent. It has the entrepreneurs. What it's still building is the infrastructure that makes those resources visible and accessible, so business owners don't have to rely on luck to find the support they need.

That's the kind of problem its3pm.io thinks about every day, just at the business level.

Running a business means wearing every hat, including podcast co-host, apparently.

ElevatePolk Podcast is back. I’m Dan Thumberg, and alongside Chrissanne Long, we’re picking up a conversation about entrepreneurship, economic development, and what’s actually happening in Polk County.

The irony isn’t lost on me that I built its3pm.io to automate the grind, and now I’m adding a podcast to my plate. But some things are worth the time.

🎙️ Episodes 1 & 2 are live on YouTube, Apple Podcast and Spotify:

💥 We pushed a big update last night and this one adds some serious context to how you evaluate opportunity.

You can now see anchor tenants directly on the map, alongside where the biggest opportunity gaps exist for any business category.

💡 The concept is simple:
Choose a business type, and the map shows you where that category is:
• Overserved (too much competition)
• Underserved (real opportunity)

Now layer in anchor tenants (major retailers that naturally drive traffic and visibility) and the picture becomes much clearer.

➡️ Why it matters:
An underserved area next to a high traffic retailer is a very different opportunity than one that’s isolated.

It’s the difference between:
“I *could* open here” vs. “I *should* open here.”

😎 And you can explore all of this without ever leaving your office (or your couch).

⚓️ New: Anchor Tenant Layer
Toggle “Show anchor tenants” to view major retail brands mapped across the area, color-coded by category. Hover to explore and quickly understand the surrounding ecosystem.

🔎 Also new (based on beta tester feedback):
We made a full pass on readability by improving contrast across labels, headings, and map elements to make everything easier to scan and use.

📍 Plus a few cleanups:
• Simplified location search
• Added a map legend for clarity
• Improved tooltip language for better context

🚀 Public Beta is opening soon.
We’re excited to finally get this in front of more people! Stay tuned.

Release notes for BGA (Business Gap Analysis Tool)

v0.3.0 — April 13, 2026

🏢 Zoning overlay on the Opportunity Map — select one or more zone types (Commercial, Office, Residential, Industrial, Mixed/Other) to overlay on the map.

🗺️ Zones are color-coded and dissolved into clean shapes so you can see exactly what's available where.

🧭 Find a Location narrative — the site finder now includes a plain-language summary below the search controls, describing how many Lakeland businesses are in the selected category, which neighborhoods have the strongest opportunity signal, and where concentration is highest. (THIS IS HUGE!!!)

📍Improved map controls layout — Geography and Map Mode controls are now side-by-side, reducing scroll to reach the map.

💡Expanded map data — additional city boundary and zoning data integrated to support the overlay feature.

Oh, and we launched an Instagram page and we promise to post pictures of every salad we have for lunch 🥗 - Give it a follow

🚀 We've been quiet. Here's why.

For the past several months, we've been heads down building something we're genuinely excited about, and today we're showing it for the first time.

This is the Business Gap Analysis tool, a data-driven platform that maps commercial demand against existing businesses to identify where opportunity exists in a local market.

What you're seeing in this video is real Lakeland data. Real gaps. Real opportunity.

We currently have a handful of beta testers putting it through its paces, and the early feedback has been exactly what we hoped for: this thing works.

Who it's built for:
✅ Small business owners evaluating expansion or new locations
✅ Entrepreneurs looking for where the market actually needs them
✅ Economic development professionals and local government leaders who want data behind their decisions

Lakeland is growing. The question isn't whether there's opportunity here, it's where, and for whom. This tool helps to answer that.

We're its3pm.io — and this is just the beginning.
