Sweden has launched a groundbreaking environmental initiative where wild crows are trained to collect discarded cigarette butts and exchange them for food via a special machine.

When a crow drops a piece of litter into the device, it releases a food reward, encouraging participation.

Researchers highlight crows’ intelligence and ability to learn complex behaviors as key to the program’s success. Early results from the pilot project indicate the approach could be highly effective for large-scale cleanup efforts.

This initiative demonstrates how innovative wildlife-assisted solutions can help tackle urban waste while engaging animals in meaningful tasks.

Bottom Fact: Sweden’s pilot program trains crows to collect cigarette litter in exchange for food, reducing public waste.

Texas Teens Make Waves with Microplastic Filter!

Several reports confirm that 17-year-olds Victoria Ou and Justin Huang from The Woodlands, Texas, have invented a tiny but powerful device that removes microplastics from water using sound waves.

Their compact system can trap up to 94% of tiny plastic pollutants, including polystyrene and polyethylene, without using chemicals or traditional filters.

The innovation was showcased at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, where the teens won the prestigious Gordon E.

Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations, along with a $50,000 prize. Their device works by generating an acoustic pressure field that captures microplastic particles while letting clean water flow through, a simple yet groundbreaking approach to fighting water pollution.

Inspired by a visit to a local water treatment plant, Victoria and Justin hope to scale their invention to help communities worldwide. Their work not only promises cleaner water but also raises awareness about microplastic pollution and its impact on the environment and human health.

This teen innovation proves that even small ideas can make a big difference!

Wonderful Copenhagen is making sustainable tourism easier with its new initiative, where visitors can pay for attractions through eco-friendly actions. For example, tourists can earn a free GreenKayak trip 🚣‍♂️ by collecting trash and sharing their efforts on social media 🌍. Other actions include planting trees 🌱 to gain entry to museums or biking around the city to unlock discounts at local restaurants. This initiative creatively encourages travelers to contribute to a greener Copenhagen while enjoying its vibrant culture.

Preventing small appliances from ending up in the dumpster. Fantastic example of reuse ♻️

When the students moved out of Bath University’s Halls this summer, they left behind some small electrical items, which had accumulated into hundreds of unwanted goods.

Rather than letting them go into landfill, we were invited to partner with the University to see what can be saved and put to good use in a new home!

We collaborated on the Leave No Trace Project which was created by the University of Bath Campus Services department. Emma from Bath University said 'We've spent hours cleaning and sorting all of the kitchen equipment for the Sustainability Stalls so that it can be reused and Freshers don't have to buy new. Equipment to pick up includes airers, small electronics, toiletries, cleaning equipment and more. We are asking for suggested donations.'

Toni and seven brilliant volunteers went up to the Uni to PAT test which items are working in good condition. Tim and George skilfully taught everyone how to competently PAT Test electrical goods, and in a productive and very enjoyable four hour session, the boxes of items were completed!

These fully tested items will be available to collect in exchange for charity donations during Freshers Week from the Sustainability Stall, so don’t worry if you forget something from your packing list - you can get small appliances from the University, and rest assured that they’re in brilliant condition! ✨

Thank you to the Sustainability team at the University of Bath for inviting us to collaborate on this brilliant initiative!
