WEDNESDAY BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Langdon Hardware

This week, Discover Cavalier County is proud to recognize a business that has been helping keep our homes, farms, cabins, and projects running smoothly for the past two decades - Langdon Hardware, owned and operated by Michelle Schefter.

For 20 years, Langdon Hardware has been a trusted destination for everything from hardware and plumbing supplies to paint, lawn and garden products, electrical supplies, sporting goods, housewares, and countless odds and ends that seem impossible to find anywhere else.

What truly sets Langdon Hardware apart is its hometown service. Whether you're tackling a major renovation, fixing a leaky faucet, or searching for that one part you need to finish a project, Michelle and her team are always ready with knowledge, advice, and a willingness to help. (I can personally say that Audra has helped me through several painting projects, and she is the BEST!)

Langdon Hardware is also home to the Langdon Hardware Garden Center, a favorite destination for gardeners throughout the region. While the Garden Center is open year-round and offers a wide variety of gardening supplies, its seasonal greenhouse is truly something special. Each spring, it is packed with colorful annuals and perennials, vegetable plants, hanging baskets, trees, shrubs, and everything needed to create beautiful gardens and landscapes. Whether you're planting your first flowerpot or planning a complete backyard transformation, the Langdon Hardware Garden Center has the products, expertise, and inspiration to help your garden grow.

But it's not just what's stocked on the shelves that makes Langdon Hardware special. It's the cookie-baking contests, holiday giveaways, friendly faces, and the daily social media posts showcasing the unique and quality products available right here in our community. It's a business that has become woven into the fabric of Cavalier County.

When visiting with Michelle, she shared her appreciation for the community that has supported Langdon Hardware throughout the years.

"We wouldn't be here without the continued support of our community. We appreciate everyone who has supported us over the years and look forward to serving you for many more years to come."

Locally owned businesses are the backbone of our communities. They create jobs, support local organizations and events, and provide the personalized service that makes small-town living special. Over the past 20 years, Langdon Hardware has been an important part of that foundation.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Michelle Schefter and the entire Langdon Hardware team on 20 years of business! Thank you for your dedication to serving our community and helping generations of customers get the job done.

Here's to many more years of helping us build, repair, improve, and create!

πŸ“ Be sure to stop in today and help celebrate this incredible milestone.

TUESDAY HISTORY & HERITAGE: Before Facebook, There Was "Central"

Today, if something happens in the community, most of us hear about it through Facebook, a text message, or a quick phone call. But more than 100 years ago, rural Cavalier County residents relied on someone known simply as "Central."

In March of 1909, the Moscow-Wales Telephone Company was organized to connect families in the Wales, Moscow, and surrounding areas. At a time when many farm families lived miles apart, having a telephone was more than a convenience, it was a lifeline.

Calls were routed through a local switchboard operator, and the first operator in Wales was Marie Maxwell. Her job wasn't limited to connecting calls. She helped share important community information, passed along messages, announced local happenings, and kept neighbors connected when news needed to travel quickly. If there was a birth, school closing, weather warning, market report, or other important community news, it often fell to Central to spread the word. She even helped locate wandering children, held messages for residents, and served as a communication lifeline for rural families.

Many families shared what was known as a party line. Instead of having a private line, several households were connected to the same telephone wire. Each family had its own ring pattern, but everyone on the line could hear the phone ring.

And, well... let's just say curiosity wasn't invented with social media. πŸ˜„

Listening in on someone else's conversation became known as "rubbering." It became common enough that telephone companies actually ran advertisements asking people to stop eavesdropping on their neighbors' calls!

One of my favorite discoveries while researching this story was an old advertisement that simply asked:

"Do You Rubber?"

Can you imagine seeing that in the newspaper today?

While technology has changed, the purpose remains the same. Whether it was a party line in 1909 or a community page in 2026, people have always looked for ways to stay connected with their neighbors.

Do you know of any old stories about party lines? Please share in the comments if you do!
