FootGolf Basics for New players

A MONUMENT on a golf course refers to a permanent marker, often made of granite, that displays information about a hole or serves as a starting point for the tee box. It typically provides details such as hole layout, distances to the green, and the hole’s par. These monuments work alongside tee boxes (the designated starting area), tee markers (smaller markers within the tee box indicating distances), greens (the prepared area containing the hole), and the holes themselves to guide players and provide essential course information.

Since FootGolf course layouts for tournaments are not usually permanent, the setup is slightly different. Instead of granite monuments, the AFGL Tour often uses feather flags at the tee box—these serve as the key reference point for players.

Feather Flag “Monuments”
- Tall, visible signs placed at the tee box
- Display the hole number and act as the main source of information for players
- Easily spotted from a distance, guiding players to the correct starting point

Tee Box
- The designated starting area for each hole
- Where a FootGolf player takes their first kick toward the fairway

Tee Markers
- Smaller markers placed within the tee box
- Define the exact area where players must start their kick
- Can be adjusted for events or skill levels if needed

How They Work Together
- Starting the Hole: Players go to the feather flag to confirm they are at the correct hole.
- Choosing the Spot: The first kick begins behind the tee markers located inside the tee box.
- Playing the Hole: The ball is advanced toward the green in as few kicks as possible.
- Reaching the Target: The goal is to sink the ball into the large FootGolf cup on the FootGolf green zone.

IMPORTANT: Tee boxes, tee markers, and hole locations can be relocated based on course conditions, to regulate pace of play, or to create different technical challenges for players.

Quick Takeaway
In FootGolf, the feather flag serves as the “monument,” identifying the hole number and tee area, while the tee markers show exactly where the first kick must begin. Together, they organize play and help the round flow smoothly.

If you are a new AFGL affiliated players and playing the U.S. Open in the Northeast in October or the Desert Storm in the Southwest in November, remember this after check-in: when you go out to practice, look for the feather flag to find your assigned hole, line up behind the tee markers, and take your opening kick with confidence!
