The increasing number of missing children cases in Kenya has sparked nationwide concern, with families, child protection groups, and civil society calling for stronger action to improve child safety and response systems.
According to the Child Protection Information Management System under the Directorate of Children Services, 10,581 cases were recorded between January 2025 and March 2026. These include 1,636 lost and found cases, 1,952 abductions, 6,820 abandonment cases, and 173 cases of trafficking. On average, this means about 18 to 24 children are reported missing every day across the country.
While authorities report that 78% of these cases have been resolved through rescues and reunifications, about 22%, approximately 2,328 children, are still unaccounted for. Nairobi continues to record the highest number of these cases, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness, prevention, and community vigilance.
Behind every statistic is a child, a family, and a community affected. There is an urgent need to strengthen protection systems, improve vigilance, and ensure faster, more coordinated responses to safeguard vulnerable children.
