"Let's cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next twenty years. The states with the best ideas to create jobs and lower energy bills by constructing more efficient buildings will receive federal support to help make it happen." ~ Barack Obama. Hey, Nevada...let's do this! But, let's also retrofit those buildings which aren't performing well. How do I do that you ask? Simple. Call US! As Nike once said: Just do it!

"The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries – we must claim its promise. " Barack Obama, January 21st, 2013.

Did you do energy upgrades to your home in 2012? Well, make sure to make your accountant aware. "The 'Fiscal Cliff' bill extends tax credits for energy efficiency upgrades to existing homes, including purchases made in 2012 and 2013. These residential tax credits cover up to 10% of the cost for energy-efficient new central air conditioners, heat pumps, water heaters, windows, insulation, ENERGY STAR metal roofs, and other products.'

Good news for residents and business owners in the recently passed 2013 Tax Credits for Residential & Commercial Energy Efficiency. See below for a few highlights.

Sec. 401. Extension of credit for energy-efficient existing homes This provides a 10-percent credit for the purchase of qualified energy efficiency improvements to existing homes. The energy-efficiency home products are retroactive for 2012 and must be "placed in service" before December 31st, 2013. The maximum credit for a taxpayer for all taxable years is $500, and no more than $200 of such credit may be attributable to expenditures on windows. This rule means that taxpayers who have claimed $500 or more of this tax credit in prior years, particularly 2009 and 2010, can no longer participate in the program.

Sec. 408. Extension of credit for energy-efficient new homes A credit of $2000 is available to home builders who build homes (including both site-built and manufactured homes) projected to save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a comparable home that meets the standards of the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (the 2003 code including the 2004 supplement). A $1000 credit is available to manufactured home producers for models that save 30% or that qualify for the federal Energy Star Homes program. These credits are available for buildings or systems placed in service before December 31, 2013.

Sec. 17D Ongoing credit for energy-efficient commercial buildings (Energy Policy Act of 2005) A tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available to owners or designers of new or existing commercial buildings that save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a building that meets ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. Partial deductions of up to $.60 per square foot can be taken for measures affecting any one of three building systems: the building envelope, lighting, or heating and cooling systems. These tax deductions are available for systems placed in service from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2013.
