Solving the Homeless Equation
I teach chess at the Courtyard on Foremaster Lane as a means to build directional skill set. Most of the guys and girls love learning chess strategies. I often insist that the participants apply whatever they learn in their lives. Homelessness is what most of the participants have in common.
Since I live out of a suitcase, I have a strong bond with many of the people on Foremaster. They sleep on mats on the ground or a hue tent or in three nearby shelters. Some sleep on Main Street. The city really doesn't care about getting the homeless into housing, they must want to contain and profit off their misfortune. Now, why would I say such a thing? The city spent millions building a gate and an outdoors facility with only 8 bathrooms to serve over 700 people.
They are more security guards than social workers and no advocates. The Mayor has turned a blind eyes to the suffering veterans, elderly, disable, mentally ill, and displaced, instead the city opens a public safety department where a library once stood. Sure, Catholic Charities and other agencies offer services, but none of these agencies have active advocates or seamless housing models.
Let's be frank: to give everyone housing changes the food chain. The agencies eat, the city eats, the police and public works eat. The emergency services and adult daycares eat. The homeless must wait for the leftovers.
Ok, I teach chess on the benches what the hay! No, I must tell people how to find work, how to fight their legal cases, how to find food, etc., etc., etc. How do we solve the equation? I think we need to move to a grant system that HUD and other agencies distribute directly to the homeless with the help of advocates. Or the people in wheelchairs can continue to wait in the hot sun for a bed on Main Street.
