The goal of the study is to provide insights into the wellness of residents at life plan communities, and identify factors relating to happiness and life satisfaction. As factors contributing to happiness vary from person to person, the article pointed out that it is important for senior communities to request resident input about their interests and design programs accordingly. A priority during planning is to ensure support of a seniorโ€™s social connections and technology was suggested as a tool to promote engagement with family and friends.

With recent changes in guidance by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, there is now more flexibility for in-person visitation at long-term care facilities. However, parameters vary widely state by state and often facility by facility. As visitation is still extremely limited in some instances, it has caused confusion for many residents and family members.

Many advocacy organizations continue to speak out on the restrictions, citing extreme distress to elderly residents whose health seriously declined during the lockdown. For example, Visitation Saves Lives, a national initiative of the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, said that the guidelines for encouraging virtual visitation donโ€™t go far enough. In response to the recent change, the organization stated that it believes, โ€œanti-disability discrimination law REQUIRES all reasonable accommodations to visitation, including ROBUST virtual visitation opportunities. Accommodating virtual visitation is a core function of facilities while residentsโ€™ in-person visitation rights are restricted.โ€

A report from IN2L summarized results from a senior living survey that revealed that COVID took a significant toll on communities in a way not recognized earlier. That is the ability to provide engagement activities to meet the needs of residents, with 62% of leaders reporting a decline in doing so. By contrast, 79% of said lifestyle was one of the top priorities of their community.

Personalized engagement is also a crucial factor in family membersโ€™ satisfaction. A lack of activities which fit their loved oneโ€™s interests was the second most-cited reason why they would not recommend a community. To mitigate this potentially serious impact on occupancy, the report concluded that communities need to adopt tools that help to clearly illustrate performance with many turning to engagement technology to address this concern.

A growing number of advocates for the aging are making pleas to Federal and state governments to loosen the restrictions that have kept senior living facilities closed to visitors for nearly a year. Safely reopening, they say, is crucial to the well-being of residents.

According to an article in Kaiser Health News, a broad range of actions is underway in support of seniors and families. For example, a petition calling for safe reopening is being coordinated by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care. Jocelyn Bogdan, the organizationโ€™s policy specialist, said โ€œAt this point, residents are becoming more likely to die of isolation and neglect than COVID.โ€

In a recent letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) also asked for prioritization of virtual visitation and connection via technology to keep families and loved ones in touch.

Communication issues between a residentโ€™s family members and staff are not uncommon in assisted living and other eldercare settings, according to a study published in the Seniors Housing and Care Journal.

The report cited that facilities which worked to enhance the family member experience also brought benefits to the resident, with positive, clear communications between staff and the family supporting a higher overall level of care.

Eldercare settings inherently include barriers to quality communication, the research pointed out. Families are dependent on staff for information about their loved ones, yet staff have little time for communication due to the stressful nature of their jobs. Facilities taking specific action to address these issues found it was effective in resolving the situation and creating more positive outcomes for families, residents and staff.

The corona virus has severely disrupted the senior care industry. According to McKnightโ€™s Senior Living, it has also been the impetus for technology adoption with a surge in both demand and expenditures for solutions.

While the need for technology ranged from telehealth to workforce applications, the pandemic also clearly revealed the detrimental effects of social isolation on seniors and that new solutions were necessary.
