Anniversary today.

On the morning of August 21, 1863, Confederate guerrilla forces led by William Quantrill attacked Lawrence. Known as Quantrill’s raiders, the confederates killed nearly 200 people and burned most of the town. This 1925 photo shows survivors of Quantrill’s raid taken at Strong Hall on the KU campus in Lawrence. Five of the survivors in the photo are African Americans. Congratulations to Michelle Enke, MLIS, CA, for receiving the 2024 Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship from the National Genealogical Society!

Michelle Enke, MLIS, CA, manager of Special Collections & Genealogy at the Wichita Public Library, Wichita, Kansas, received the 2024 Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship. Created in 1999 by NGS, the award is named for the late P. William Filby, former director of the Maryland Historical Society and author of many genealogical reference tools that genealogists have relied on for decades. It is presented annually at the NGS Family History Conference.

Congratulations to Guy Windholz of Ellis, Kansas, for receiving the 2024 Genealogical Tourism Award from the National Genealogical Society.

The Genealogy Tourism Award is awarded for the promotion of local genealogy research. This year's recipient Guy Windholz has been the curator, treasurer, and member of the Bukovina Society in Ellis, Kansas, for many years. He has worked diligently to finance the preservation of historical documents and loaned family heirlooms, as well as providing guided tours and overseeing restoration projects for the museum. He serves on the Hays Senior Center Board, the Ellis County Courthouse Preservation Committee, and Ellis Tourism Committee. Windholz has shared information through presentations and a newsletter as well as local newspaper articles and interviews. He has assisted hundreds of travelers coming to the society for help from almost all fifty states. He has also promoted tourism and country-to-country sharing between Americans and Germans from the Bukovina and Volga German heritage families and has worked to build relationships between the countries.

ATTENTION! We apologize for an error in the schedule below. The traveling exhibit "All Aboard the Orphan Train" will actually be in GOVE, Kansas, at the Gove County Historical Association Museum, 505 Washington Street, from July 29 through September 8, 2024. It will NOT be on display in Quinter, KS.

For those interested in sponsoring this traveling exhibit, we are currently compiling a wait list for 2025 and will begin booking mid-June 2024.
