Florida businesses, another compliance deadline is right around the corner! 👀

Florida Business Tax Receipts (BTRs) are due for renewal by September 30. As we head into September, now is a good time to review the cities and counties where your business holds BTRs and make sure those renewals are accounted for✍

📢 And for Florida contractors, there's an extra reason to pay attention.

If you just completed your state contractor license renewal, don't forget about the local side of compliance. This is also a good time to confirm that applicable jurisdictions have your updated license information and review any other local registrations that may need attention.

State licensing may get most of the attention, but local compliance matters too👏

What does a Wednesday at iComply look like? A little bit of everything. 😅

Today included new city license requests, compliance updates with local jurisdictions, application prep and follow-ups, conversations with licensing boards, client signatures, qualifier outreach... and tracking down a document we've been working to get since June.

That last one involved multiple phone calls, some quality time on hold 😂, and ultimately getting the board to expedite a copy to us via email this week after the original never arrived by mail. Small win, but an important one!

A lot of licensing work happens in the follow-up. It's not always submitting the application—sometimes it's knowing who to call, what to ask, and continuing to follow up until you get what you need.

💡 Proactive licensing vs. reactive licensing. What's the difference?

A lot of the time, it's simply when the conversation starts.

Reactive licensing sounds like:

💠 "We just signed a customer in a new state. How quickly can we get licensed?”
💠 “Our qualifier left. What do we do now?”
💠 “We need to pull a permit, but there's an issue with our license.”

Proactive licensing sounds like:

💠 “We're looking at expanding into these markets next quarter. What should we start now?”
💠 “Our qualifier may be transitioning out. What are our options?”
💠 “These licenses are coming up for renewal. What do we need to do ahead of time?”

Unfortunately, the difference sometimes doesn't become obvious until licensing starts affecting operations.

A launch gets pushed back. A permit can't be pulled. A license expires while a renewal is still processing. A qualifier leaves without a replacement lined up.

These are the situations where having a little more time can make a BIG difference 👏

Being proactive doesn't mean you'll never run into a licensing issue. It means you're watching what's coming, planning ahead where you can, and giving yourself more options when something unexpected happens.

The earlier licensing becomes part of the conversation, the easier it is to keep it from becoming an operational problem.

What does a licensing manager actually do all day? 🤓
The short answer: a little bit of everything. 😂

On any given day, you might find us researching requirements for a new market, preparing applications, chasing down documentation, coordinating with qualifiers, following up with state boards, handling renewals, updating business information, or troubleshooting something we definitely didn't have on the bingo card that morning.

No two days look quite the same. It's a lot of details, a lot of follow-up, and yes... a lot of spreadsheets.

But behind all of it is one goal: keeping our clients compliant, operational, and moving forward. 🤝

Does your market expansion plan factor in licensing? 📈
One of the biggest surprises we see isn’t that companies forget about licensing...

It’s that they underestimate how long it can take.

A company will have everything lined up:
✔️ Sales team ready
✔️ Operations in place
✔️ Project managers assigned
✔️ Crews prepared
✔️ Customers waiting

Then we get the call:
“We’re targeting a launch in this state next month.”

Sometimes that’s realistic.

Sometimes, the licensing timeline alone is three to six months.

Suddenly, an entire launch strategy has to be reworked.

The truth is, licensing isn’t something to think about at the end of an expansion plan—it’s something to build into the timeline from day one ☝

The earlier you start, the more flexibility you have, the fewer surprises you’ll encounter, and the more likely your expansion stays on schedule.

Expansion starts long before your first project.

Your license expires August 31!

Have you taken care of everything?
✔️ Completed your CE?
✔️ Submitted your renewal?
⚠️ Received your updated license?
⚠️ Updated ALL AHJs where you are registered?

Renewing your license is only half the process.

Every year, we’ve seen contractors wait until the last minute to complete their renewal, assuming everything will be updated immediately.

Unfortunately, that’s often not the case.

Your renewal still has to be processed by the state, your updated license must be issued, and then it needs to be provided to every city and jurisdiction where you’re registered.

Many jurisdictions require an updated copy of your renewed license before they’ll allow you to continue pulling permits. In some cases, we’ve even seen contractor accounts temporarily placed on hold before the expiration date when the updated license hasn’t yet been received.

Once an account is on hold, projects can be delayed until the updated license is submitted to the city and processed.

The best way to avoid those delays is to start your renewal EARLY, so you have your updated license in hand before the deadline arrives.

💡 Renew early. Avoid delays. Keep your projects moving.

💡 Did You Know?

Being licensed with your state doesn't always mean you're ready to work.

Many cities and counties require their own contractor registrations before work can begin. It's one of the most common compliance issues we see, especially for companies expanding into new markets. Before starting your next project, make sure you've checked both your state and local licensing requirements.

A little research upfront can save a lot of headaches later.

Registering your business doesn’t mean you’re licensed to work. This is one of the most common misconceptions we see.

A business registration (LLC, corporation, etc.) allows you to operate as a legal entity—but it does NOT give you permission to perform regulated work like electrical, solar, or general contracting.

In most cases, you’ll need both:
✔ A registered business
✔ The proper contractor license(s)

Missing that second piece can stop a project before it even starts.
