The month of May is Wildfire Awareness Month - a critical time to prepare your home and community for warmer, dryer summer months. We will be focusing on fire prevention, education, and creating defensible space, as most wildfires are human-caused and many home ignitions result from embers. Prepare now for wildfire season!

Here’s another useful tip:

Did you know that in many counties you can do property or records searches without ever leaving your home or office? Many counties, including Fergus County, use idoc for electronic records research. Be sure to check out the county website for additinal information. Most of the time the link will be located under the Clerk & Recorder section.

With more than two decades of experience in land use and local floodplain management, I was recently approached to provide my most critical advice for landowners. My response emphasized the necessity of conducting a thorough examination of miscellaneous papers, surveys, and plats for the property in question.

Landowners have frequently encountered issues due to their lack of awareness regarding lot layouts, covenants, designated floodplains, and other concerns. It is far more advantageous and less expensive to be aware of these factors beforehand rather than after the fact.

Temperatures are getting colder. ❄️ As you heat your home, prevent home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups, and make sure you keep anything that can burn 3 feet away from heat sources.
