The Obama Administration has initiated talks on restricting the aerospace industry's greenhouse gas emissions, stating that it might take some time before exact regulations take effect. According to the EPA, like the automobile industry and power plants, airplanes also negatively impact human health; thus, restrictions are necessary. Creating the regulations will take some time — nothing will be enacted while Obama is in office, and will be the next president's responsibility. [ 409 more words. ]

Titanium Sponge Plant to be Built in Saudi Arabia http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Dx

Saudi Arabia-based Royal Commission in Yanbu — an independent organization from the government — is currently building a factory to create titanium sponge. The current plant will undergo a technological upgrade, and will be outfitted with high-pressure oxidation equipment in order to generate titanium dioxide. The plant is slated to finish and begin producing titanium sponge by 2017. It is anticipated that the output of the new plant and the retrofitted plant will be 15,600 metric tons of titanium sponge annually, and 120 thousand tons of titanium dioxide yearly. “California governor orders country’s most aggressive emission cut goals” – The Washington Post, 29 April 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Dz

California is currently undergoing an overly aggressive, record-breaking drought. In order to combat that drought, California Governor Jerry Brown (D) has not only put a cap on how much water residents can use, but is also placing a cap on emissions levels. For California, the worsening effects of climate change have directly led to its water shortage. Greenhouse gas… [ 352 more words. ]

“Michael Bloomberg’s war on coal” – Politico, 8 April 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Dn

The fight to bring an end to coal has been raging on for months, and now Michael Bloomberg is attempting to serve the final blow: donating millions of dollars to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign, with the aim to close down hundreds of US coal plants. First, however, Bloomberg required the Sierra Club to collect data on how his money would be used. [ 358 more words. ]

“Vatican Announces Major Summit On Climate Change” – ThinkProgress, 16 April 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Dl

Pope Francis has made climate change one of the cornerstones of his papacy, recently hosting a climate change summit at the Vatican, which he hopes will bridge the gap between climate change and religion. The conference, called “Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity. The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Development,” was held on April 28 and featured prominent leaders, like the Director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey Sachs, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who gave the opening speech. “Aluminum “superatoms” hint at a new type of superconducting materials” – Gizmag, 28 February 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-CN

Scientists at the University of Southern California (USC) are currently in the throes of uncovering new superconductor materials that could be very useful for the electronics, medical imaging, microscopy, and electric motors industries, amongst other markets. In electronics, as electrons move through a circuit, they generate electrical resistance and emit waste energy in the form of heat, which is why, for instance, when our laptops overheat, the internal fan turns on and cools it down. “US New Auto Sales: Ford F-Series Pickup Truck Deliveries Drop; Ford Explorer Soars” – International Business Times, 3 March 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-CH

This past December, Ford rolled out its aluminum-body F-150 truck, the first of its kind for the company, but it seems like the new truck is just not cutting it: sales dipped for the car manufacturer's F-Series truck line this February, and has put the company squarely behind its competitors. Typically, the F-150 has the highest selling rate in the US; however, this February, overall sales dropped by two percent. [ 145 more words. ]

“Norsk Hydro to acquire German aluminum recycler” – Recycling Today, 3 March 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-CF

Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro is purchasing WMR Recycling GmbH, which, according to Hydro, means Hydro will be the leading entity in aluminum scrap sorting technology. WMR utilizes x-ray transmission and other forward-thinking technology to sort scrap; the facility has the ability to sift through 36,000 metric tons of scrap annually. The aluminum scrap will also be used to provide material for Hydro's other Europe-based… [ 107 more words. ]

“India Looks to New Policies to Promote Scrap Metal Recycling” – Metal Miner, 23 February 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Db

India's recycling rate is the one of the lowest in the world, hovering around 25%, while the US's rate has climbed, now sitting at 90%. India's recycling rate remains poor because the government is fairly indifferent, and because the population is unaware of the advantages of recycling. The country's low recycling rate is a stressor on India's primary production — constantly having to manufacture primary metals instead of recycling scrap has weakened India's natural resources. “New Titanium-Making Process Could Result in Lighter Aircraft” – MIT Technology Review, 26 February 2015 http://wp.me/p1HfIt-Cx

The aerospace industry has begun to employ more titanium in the production of aircraft parts, including engine components and fan blades. The lighter metal is invulnerable to corrosion, permits less fuel usage, and is adaptable to carbon composite materials, which can be found in many new aircrafts. Aluminum has typically been used in aircraft manufacturing, however the material conflicts with carbon composites. [ 154 more words. ]
