A mummy does not have to chase you. It wraps you up until you cannot move.

Ransomware can do something similar to a business. It locks files and systems while attackers demand payment. Some attacks also involve stolen data and threats to publish it.

Offline backups can help your team recover after the threat is contained, but restoring files cannot undo data theft.

Prepare before the bandages tighten. Keep critical backups offline and encrypted, test that you can restore them, and keep systems updated. Make sure your team knows who leads the response and who to contact first.

Join us for Cybersecurity Awareness month with a spooky twist! Starting with the infamous Vampire:

The most convincing threats do not always look suspicious. Sometimes they look familiar.

Like a vampire taking the shape of a bat, a phishing message can mimic a person or company you trust. It may use a familiar name and look completely professional. That does not mean it is real.

Be careful with urgent or unexpected requests, especially when someone wants you to act fast. Don't be jump-scared into action!

If something feels off, stop and check it another way. Go to the company’s official website, call a number you already know, or reach out to the person directly. Do not click anything in the message or use the number it gives you.

Before you act, make sure you know who is really asking.

Back to Basics, Lesson 4: Verify It Another Way

Maybe it’s an email that looks like it came from your boss asking you to buy gift cards. Or a text from a vendor with new payment instructions that came out of nowhere. The message looks familiar, but something feels off.

That doesn’t automatically mean it’s fake, but it does mean you should pause before doing what it asks. Scammers are counting on you to act first and think later.

A quick check can keep you from sending money to the wrong place or handing over access to an account.

Call the person using a number you already have. If the request came from a company, go to its website yourself and use the contact information there. Don’t use the link or phone number in the original message to check whether it is real.

Your ongoing assignment: when an unexpected message shows up, make sure it actually has a hall pass before you act.

Back to Basics, Lesson 3: Stop Putting Off Updates

We’ve all done it. An update pops up right when you’re in the middle of something, so “remind me later” wins. Then it wins again the next day. And the next day.

Updates aren’t just about new features. They often fix security flaws in your computer, phone, browser, and apps that could otherwise give someone a way in.

The longer you put them off, the longer those flaws stay unfixed.

Turn on automatic updates where you can. If one needs a restart, schedule it for a time that won’t interrupt your work.

Your assignment: check the devices and apps you rely on most and install any updates waiting for you.

Back to Basics, Lesson 2: Add a Second Step

Last time, we talked about giving every account its own password. This week, we’re adding another layer of protection with two-factor authentication, or 2FA.

Strong passwords matter, but they can still be stolen, leaked, or tricked out of you.

2FA adds another step when you sign in. That could be a code from an authenticator app, a text message, or an approval from a device you trust.

If someone gets your password, that extra step can still keep them out.

Turn on 2FA anywhere it’s available, especially on accounts that contain sensitive information or give access to important business tools.

Back to Basics, Lesson 1: One Account, One Password

Reusing passwords is convenient. It’s also how one compromised account can turn into several.

If a password is exposed on one site, it can be tried on your email, Microsoft 365 account, banking login, social media, and anywhere else you may have used it.

That’s why every account should have its own password.

Of course, nobody wants to memorize dozens of different passwords. That’s where a password manager comes in. It can generate strong passwords, save them, and keep you from having to remember each one.

If you’ve got some password reuse to clean up, start with your email, banking, and work accounts. Then work your way through the rest.

That’s your homework for this week. Luckily, there’s no test on Friday!

As the kids head back to school, we thought it was a good time for the rest of us to get back to the basics, too.

Follow along as we revisit these four tech habits worth brushing up on:

1. Use a different password for every account. A password manager makes it easier to keep every password strong and unique.

2. Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is available. That extra step can keep someone out even if they get your password.

3. Install updates instead of letting “remind me later” keep winning. Updates often include important security fixes, so try not to fall too far behind.

4. If an unusual request shows up by email or text, verify it another way before responding. Let's make sure that unexpected message actually has a hall pass.

That’s the syllabus. Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each one.
