Girdling is a valuble practice on many timber stand improvment project! Here’s a little bit about why!

How it works 💥🪵

-A sharp tool cuts through the bark, cambium, and sometimes the sapwood
-This severs the vascular cambium, which prevents nutrients from flowing between the roots and the leaves
-The tree starves and dies over time

Why it's used 🦌💥

-To control or eradicate large woody species
-To thin forests
-To control non-native invasive tree species
-To create standing dead trees that provide habitat for wildlife

Getting ready to clear the river bank on Ellis Rd for the DOT road widing project earlier this fall. It’s a much more enjoyable dive with a great view of the Cedar River!
