Employee wellness and resiliency are not only important to the success of the the organization but for the success of the individual human person.

Leaders of any organization have a great responsibility to take care of their people. Organizations suffer most when their people are suffering.

I am proud to have partnered with the Center for Su***de Awareness in bringing leadership, wellness and resiliency training to organizations who care about their people.

Many organizations believe that because they have a human resources department or an employee assistance program that all is ok, or that they are covered. This is not always true.

Leadership, wellness and resiliency programs should be tailored to each department or profession to meet their unique and specific needs.

LEADERSHIP...

As we remember and celebrate the work of Martin Luther King Jr. I appreciate the below quote by him. To me, this is the essence of courageous leadership.

Leaders often have to make difficult decisions that aren't always popular or easy. Making sound, ethical and moral decisions during stressful or difficult times takes the courage to do the right thing and for the right reason(s). Dr. King embodied this type of leadership during his activism for civil rights.

Challenging moments require strong leadership that creates learning and growth. Challenges should not be viewed as problems but rather, as opportunities for learning and growth.

🛡️ Strengthening Frontline Resilience 🛡️
Frontline workers — police, fire, EMS, dispatchers, crisis line staff, and healthcare professionals — carry a heavy burden every day. The emotional and psychological demands of their work can lead to stress, burnout, and in some tragic cases, suicidal thoughts.

But there is hope — Master Resiliency Training (MRT) offers a proven, evidence-based path to building strength, not just surviving but thriving under pressure. 🌱
This free, two-day program (provided in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin) helps participants sharpen tools in:
✔️ Mental & emotional resilience
✔️ Stress & trauma coping
✔️ Physical well-being
✔️ Social support & connection
✔️ Meaning, purpose & spiritual grounding

Participants call it “life-changing,” praising its real-world relevance and the solidarity built among peers.

This Su***de Prevention Month, let’s remember: our protectors need protection too. Let’s support our frontline heroes by giving them the resources to care for themselves — so they can continue caring for us. ❤️

LEARNING, GROWING & SUCCEEDING...

It's what leaders should be doing with their people. Effective leaders help others to learn. By learning, people grow. When people grow, they can succeed.

Leaders should also be learning, growing and succeeding on their own. The path of continuous, self-improvement is not an easy one. After time, leaders become comfortable in their capabilities and in their organizations. They become stagnant and so does the rest of the team. When choosing a path, the more difficult or challenging one is often the right one. It's the right one because it will challenge you to learn and grow.

When leading others, leaders often forget that not everyone is on the same page. As a former law enforcement administrator, I often expected that when a new officer graduated from the academy, they would understand and do things the same way as other, new officers. This is a mistake that could have a negative effect on that officer's development and overall career. Because of things like cultural differences, different values and beliefs, and cognition, people learn and retain things in different ways.

Leadership and training must meet individuals to where they are at - not where everyone else is. Expectations and goals can be the same, but the process of getting people there can be very different. Successful leadership realizes this and adapts to it.

Equitable leadership understands that not everyone in the organization is the same. Equitable leadership continuously works towards making realistic access and opportunities in learning and growing for all their people.

TEACHERS ARE LEADERS...

To all you teachers starting a new school year this week - Thank you!

You are leaders. You lead by teaching our children and helping them grow in life. Without your leadership, these children would not grow - they would fail. They need your leadership even if they don't say it. They need your leadership to succeed in life.

You may sometimes view your job as monotonous and not having an impact. However, your continued efforts are what keeps us, as a society, from regressing. Without your leadership, classrooms would be pointless. They might as well be empty.

Most teachers probably don't think of themselves as leaders. A leader is someone who, through example, instruction and inspiration, has a positive impact on another. They help others learn and grow and improve their quality of life.

Don't forget to lead yourself too. Take care of yourself and never stop learning as an adult.

Teachers ARE leaders. Thank you for your leadership as educators and mentors to our children.

Leadership requires a vision and a plan. Leadership is the conduit from that vision and plan to implementation.

When I became the police chief at Fox Valley Metro in 2018, I quickly learned from staff and community that the department needed a K9 unit. Understanding that budget constraints wouldn't allow for funding of this, I worked to implement a non-profit foundation that was made of of community members.

The Metro K9 Foundation became a reality in 2020. Within a few months they were able to raise over $100K to start the program.

Five years later this great organization is still going strong. It takes dedicated volunteers to make this happen. The leadership of the foundation, past and present, have worked hard to make this program a success. Kudos to the Metro Police K-9 Foundation for their tireless efforts!

The Metro K-9 Foundation is a great example of how local government organizations and community stakeholders can work together to improve the quality of life for their residents.

A few weeks ago I played in the Foundation's Fifth Annual Golf Outing. This was my first not as the chief, but as the retired chief.
I was so proud of the Foundation members and all that helped to make this outing another successful fund raising event.

Vision - Plan - Discipline - Teamwork - Success!

THE OBSTACLE IS THE WAY...

Self-discipline is the pathway from having goals and aspirations to succeeding. Life can be difficult. Being an effective leader can be even more difficult. The achievement of greater things requires effort well beyond that which we are often comfortable with.

Marcus Aurelius understood this. He realized and philosophized that "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way."

Leadership requires us to operate outside of our comfort zone. Leadership requires maximum effort. Growth comes from self-discipline and hard work.

Leaders cannot view challenges as problems or nuisances. They should be viewed as opportunities for learning and growth. With learning and growth comes self-improvement.

The path to leadership is long and filled with obstacles. The terrain can be difficult and is often changing. Your physical and emotional state of well-being can help you navigate this challenge. Stay the course!
