I had an absolute blast last week at the NUME conference in Logan Utah. 

I met so many people representing various manufacturing businesses.

I was really inspired by all the ambitious people doing such hard work every day in Utah.

And really enjoyed sharing about preventative healthcare to these businesses and how beneficial it can be for their workforces and their bottom line. 💪

The Expense You Don't Question

Business owners scrutinize almost every expense.

Rent.

Materials.

Insurance.

Labor.

Software.

Utilities.

But there are areas of payroll and employee benefits where it's easy to assume:

“That's just what it costs.”

Sometimes it isn't.

There can be legitimate ways of structuring employee benefits that create financial advantages for the business while also providing value to employees.

Before assuming everything is already optimized, it's worth knowing what's available.

For the employee to get more, the employer has to spend more.

That isn't necessarily true.

There are benefit structures designed to create advantages on both sides of the paycheck.

The employee can receive something valuable.

Get ready.....for a Different Benefits Question

Here's a benefits question I think more employers should ask:

Does this benefit actually make it easier for my employees to take care of themselves?

Not:

Does it look good in the employee handbook?

Not:

Can we say we offer it?

But:

Will our employees actually use it?

That's the standard I'd use.

Putting Off the Doctor 🙈

How many employees put off going to the doctor because they're wondering:

“How much is this going to cost me?”

So they wait.

And sometimes a small problem becomes a bigger one.

For the employee, that's obviously not good.

But there's another side to it.

Eventually, poor access to healthcare can show up at work through missed shifts, disrupted schedules and lost productivity.

Making preventative care easier to access isn't *only* good for employees.

There's a business argument for it too.

When Three People Call Out

If you run a 40-person manufacturing company and three people call out tomorrow morning, what happens?

Someone covers the shift.

Someone works overtime.

Something gets delayed.

And everybody else feels it.

That's why I don't think employee health is only an HR issue.

It's an operations issue.

Making healthcare easier for employees to access can matter to the business, too.
