This is not just a venue. It’s a time machine. A temple. A cinematic shrine.

The Art Theatre of Long Beach first opened its doors in 1924 as a silent movie house — orchestra pit, pipe organ, and all.

More than a century later, it stands as the last remaining independent cinema in Long Beach: a living monument to art, resilience, and reinvention.

After the 1993 earthquake, The Art was reborn with its iconic Art Deco curves. It was revamped in 1947 with mid-century flair, and finally fully restored in 2008 to its Deco roots.

Today, this cultural gem lives on, bringing films of artistic, historical, and cultural significance to the public — alongside workshops, discussion groups, and cinematic education.

This summer, it’s the stage for a new kind of story. A STRANGE one…
