As proofreaders, we need to identify potential errors in writing when we read a sentence. Here is an example of a sentence that many believe needs a comma and can be easily overlooked if not trained. Do you think a comma is needed? I will add the answer and rationale in my comment. Thank you!

QUIZ: Can you find the error in the sentences below? Hint—there is only one! See my comment for the correct answer.

One of the critical roles of a proofreader is to catch these errors so that your writing will give you credibility and work “for” you. Ready, set, go!

Which is it—until, till, or ‘til? “Until” today, this may have been a stumbling block for you. Has this dilemma tripped you up in your writing? Stumble no more!

Until, till, and ‘til are all used to express when something will occur—let’s dig in:

1. Until indicates continuance to a specified time, per Merriam-Webster, and is normally used in formal writing. Until is perceived to be slightly more formal than till. (e.g., We walked until the sun went down.)

2. Till is the proper synonym for the preposition and conjunction of until. Till is correct to use, which can be an issue when writing formally. (e.g., I am rarely awake till midnight.)

3. ‘Til is rarely used in formal writing and is normally found in casual writing and poetry, such as “open ‘til midnight.”

HYPHENS—do they give you a difficult time? You are not alone! Proofreaders come across these types of errors in writing all the time. Here are a couple examples that confuse many writers--are they correct as written?

She lives in a fifth-floor apartment.
They always hire high-quality teachers.
She is a highly paid teacher.

In the first example, when you have an ordinal number plus a noun, it is hyphenated. In the second example, an adjective is hyphenated before a noun. In the third example, an adverb ending in "ly" is not hyphenated. Did you get them right?

It takes a trained eye and a lot of experience to catch these errors. Stay tuned for more of these posts coming your way!

I wanted to give you a couple examples of problematic words you may come across as you work on your writing (from CMOS Style Guide):

Altogether vs. all together—Altogether means “wholly” or “entirely” (she is talking about an altogether different issue). All together refers to a unity of time or place (we will finally be all together at the wedding).

Empathy vs. sympathy—Empathy is the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems (I have a lot of empathy for her). Sympathy is generally compassion and sorrow one feels for another’s misfortunes, especially on a particular occasion (our deep sympathies go out to your family).
