In order for music to survive and grow, the intrinsic process of artist discovery need to be maintained.

30 years ago, a record label would have sent their A&R people to track down good, talented musicians and sign them, develop them, and turn them into successes.

Fast forward to today, record labels are still making less money than they did when CDs were a thing. What this means is record labels are willing to take less risks; they have to be concerned about an artist's social numbers, stream counts, and sales. The problem with this train of thought is it favors those who are more skilled at social media, not necessarily musicly.
