Police shooting of teenager with autism and cerebral palsy in Pocatello, Idaho (April 5, 2025)
โThe incident occurred on April 5, 2025, in Pocatello, Idaho, when police shot and killed Victor Perez, a 17-year-old boy with autism and cerebral palsy. Police were called to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a man with a knife who appeared to be intoxicated. When they arrived, they found Perez sitting in his yard holding a large knife. Police ordered Perez to drop the knife, but he refused and stood up and walked toward them. Four officers opened fire within 12 seconds of leaving their patrol car, shooting Perez multiple times. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, underwent multiple surgeries, and had one of his legs amputated. After a week in the hospital, Perez was taken off life support and died on April 12, 2025.
Perez's family has filed a lawsuit against the city of Pocatello, alleging excessive force and emotional distress. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with protests and candlelight vigils outside the hospital and city hall.
