Every day do something positive. The smallest of actions will still move you forward. Putting one foot after the other will get you to where you will need to be. You may not be able to control everything, but you can control some things – focus on those items first. Start with a smile. Try shaking hands with friends and strangers. Call others and thank them for being part of your life. Sweep a floor, shovel snow...or, whatever you can think of -- just keep moving forward.

Do you believe in angels? How about miracles?

I took this picture in 2004 at Marantha Springs, Ohio.

Two years prior, I suddenly lost most of my vision in one eye. I was diagnosed with an eye disease that doctors believed would leave me completely blind.

A friend suggested that I visit Marantha Springs because it was a place where miracles are said to have occurred. She suggested that I put the lake water on my eyes. So, I did that.

My fear of going blind made me carry a camera with me every day. I couldn't see what I was filming but I could enlarge it on my computer. While there, I took this photo of a statute of Archangel Michael. This angel is known for several things but principally as the "Warrior Angel" and the angel that helps those at the time of death.

Days and weeks passed but my eyes were unchanged.

Two years after the photo was taken, I decided to return to my work as a crisis manager and a restructuring professional. I put Michael as my screen saver on my laptop. It was the fall of 2006. I had no idea of the horrible recession that was about to unfold. Within months my phone began to ring and would not stop for another six years. Companies were falling out of the sky. I raced from business to business trying to keep them alive. Each step of the way, Michael was there with me, fighting to keep them, and me, afloat.

Each year, my vision deteriorated...but, I kept working. I lived in a complete fog and blur. Often experiencing vertigo.

By 2014, it was impossible to function on a daily basis. I visited surgeons, preparing for a double cornea transplant. It was then that I met a doctor that informed me about a procedure that could help me. I agreed to the treatment and within a couple days, 80% of my vision had been restored. To me it was magical. Archangel Michael kept me protected until it was the right time for a miracle. A phenomena that would change my life in an unimaginable way.

Why don't we have funerals for dead companies?

A business can exist for years, decades, and even a century or more. Then one day it closes, everyone is fired, all the assets are sold off, and life goes on. Rarely is there a mention after it's gone. Or, a long discussion trying to understand what brought about its demise and what it means to people in the community.

As human beings, as souls, we have learned over thousands of years that the closer we come to death the more we appreciate life. The entire process of being vulnerable and fragile is part of being alive. We fall, we get hurt, we go to doctors and hospitals, we have surgery, we take medicine, and despite our best efforts, we eventually die. It’s messy, frustrating, heartbreaking, and painful, but we still need to see it, talk about it and, learn from it. That analysis and learning will only make us stronger as people and as a community. And, all of this applies to a business, as well.

Often, it’s the biggest living entity in a community.
