Welcome to Day 6 of Skirt Sewing School!

Today’s reel is a continuation of yesterday’s lesson on how to attach gathers to your garment. It’s Part 2 but also Part 6 within this series.

A quick recap of what we’ve covered…
🪡 Part 1: overview of how to sew a skirt with no pattern
🪡 Part 2: how to calculate the dimensions of your rectangles 👉 based off your body and desired design
🪡 Part 3: how to sew French seams. Rectangles are now sewn into “tubes”, attached at the side seams with French seams
🪡 Part 4: how to gather fabric
🪡 Part 5: how to easily attach gathers

The last step to finishing off your skirt is to create a channel at the waist for your elastic to feed through. You will base the size of the channel off of the size elastic you’re using. You will also want to hem the bottom to your desired length by folding the fabric WRONG sides together, iron, and then fold again so that the raw edges are tucked away and hidden.

It’s been such a treat to bring you this skirt series! Warms my heart to see all your lovely comments 🥰 feel free to send photos of your finished skirt!

This is the final video in the series but I’m working on a carousel with a recap of the whole process

Thanks for following along! 🫶

Welcome to Day 4 of Skirt Sewing School!

A quick recap of what we’ve covered so far…
🪡 Part 1: overview of how to sew a skirt with no pattern
🪡 Part 2: how to calculate the dimensions of your rectangles 👉 based off your body and desired design
🪡 Part 3: how to sew French seams. Rectangles are now sewn into “tubes”, attached at the side seams with French seams.

Now it’s time for gathering! In this video we will walk through how to gather the fabric, however, I have some additional guidance regarding attaching the gathers. It’s helpful to notch the fabric into quarters before gathering to easily evenly distribute gathers. If you’re unsure how to do this, I have a detailed tutorial dropping in Part 5 ✨

Plz note:
There are LOTS of methods for gathering fabric. This is how I learned so it’s generally my go-to but feel free to share your favorite method in the comments 🫶

Happy Sewing!

Welcome to Day 3 of Skirt Sewing School!

At this point you should have the dimensions of your rectangles calculated. If you haven’t yet cut them out, please note you can either cut out:
X2 of each rectangle (2 for top tier, and 2 for bottom) OR you can cut:
1 of each and cut on the fold (in this case the width will be half because it’s cut on the fold)

Next it’s time for sewing up the side seams using a French seam. This tutorial will walk you through how to do that. After you sew the side seams you should have 2 “tubes” ready for gathering!

Please note:
✂️ If you cut 4 rectangles, you will sew 4 French seams (at side seams)
🪡 If you cut on the fold, you will sew 2 French seams

Combined two different swimwear sewing construction methods for these bottoms resulting in a pretttyyyy perfect fit 🥰

For the front:
Sewed RIGHT sides of the fabric together to make “reversible style”
For the back:
Sewed WRONG sides together and attached elastic to edge, then folded over
