My boyfriend fell down our stairs on Thanksgiving day ten years ago. Instead of fixing the hole, we got creative, and today he is my husband.
I remember standing there looking at this perfectly boyfriend-shaped hole in our drywall, trying to decide if I should laugh or cry. He was fine, just embarrassed, but the damage to our hallway was pretty dramatic. We were broke college students at the time, so calling a handyman was not exactly in the budget.
That is when I had what might have been the best or worst idea of my relationship. Instead of patching it up like normal people, I convinced him we should turn it into art. We carefully framed around the hole, added proper backing, and created an actual gallery-style display.
The museum-style placard was my favorite touch - "First Thanksgiving 2015, Medium: Hand, Drywall" like it was some important installation piece. Every time people come over, they do a double-take when they realize what they are looking at.
I found the perfect frame and mounting materials through some DIY artists on the Tedooo app where I sell my quirky home decor pieces. People there understood that sometimes the most memorable art comes from the most unexpected moments.
Ten years later, this hole has become part of our story. It reminds us that we have always been the kind of couple who finds humor in disasters and turns problems into memories. Friends always ask if we are ever going to fix it properly, but honestly, why would we?
When we got married last year, we joked that this hole was the first thing we created together as a team. It might not be traditional art, but it perfectly captures who we are as a couple - a little chaotic, definitely creative, and always ready to make the most of whatever life throws at us.
