October 14, 1969.
The “Miracle Mets” entered the World Series as one of the biggest underdogs in baseball history. Just seven years after the franchise lost 120 games in its inaugural 1962 season, New York completed one of the most improbable turnarounds the sport had ever seen. Led by Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Cleon Jones, Tommie Agee, and manager Gil Hodges, the Mets surged from perennial expansion-era cellar dweller to National League champions in a single historic season. Baltimore had won 109 games, featured future Hall of Famers across the roster, and was widely expected to overpower New York. Instead, Shea Stadium became the stage for one of baseball’s greatest upsets.
That night, a 22-year-old Nolan Ryan was called on to finish Game 3 in front of more than 57,000 fans at Shea. Ryan threw the final 2⅓ scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 3 Orioles to earn the only World Series save of his career.
The game is remembered for Tommie Agee’s historic defense and the rise of the Miracle Mets, but Ryan’s appearance offered an early glimpse of the overpowering arm that would later redefine pitching history. Long before 5,714 strikeouts and 7 no-hitters, Nolan Ryan helped close out one of the defining wins of the 1969 postseason.
