Would you be nervous cleaning an $80K camera sensor? 😬

This is an 8.6K sensor found on Sony’s Flagship Venice 2 camera.

Cleaning a sensor requires special swabs with a special cleaning liquid in order to do it safely.

This way you don’t damage the sensor and you keep your shots clean!

Have you ever cleaned a camera sensor?

gives us a detailed breakdown of how they lit this scene:

How we lit this project with DP:

Our two challenges for this short 8 hour day were lighting a stationary ambulance and a moving passenger vehicle in a studio.

The ambulance part was fairly straightforward. We have utilised an Aputure 600C pro with a LightDome150 as our key, using LEE 652 urban sodium. We had a backlight, a NOVA panel bouncing into a styro in the back compartment, hitting the driver with a nice soft wrap from behind. Another NOVA P600C was used as the blue strobe effect from a 45 degree angle slightly above eyeline.

The second part was the tricky one, filming a moving car. Our starting point was from pitch black, so that we could dial in every effect one by one without stepping into chaos.

We started with the 600C and the light dome, using a randomised (2s-4.6s pulse), on 6500K + 1/2 green.

The second part was a NOVA P600C on a desaturated red setting, also pulsing, mimicking braking cars and passing streetlights in front.
From camera side, we used a line consisting of 8 Astera Titan tubes, running a simple one color chase with LEE 652.

The cherry on top was an additional NOVA directly from behind, hitting the rear view mirror and reflecting 6500K white onto the driver’s eyeline. I have done this effect manually from time to time on the sidus link console page to mimic cars pulling up behind the driver.

We had a few LS60X spotlights randomly shining onto the windows and windshield, just to add a more organic feeling by introducing more changes to the luminescent environment.

All the projections were done with a semi-translucent screen and a high power projector. We matched our light colors to the projection in real time.

Michael B. Jordan taking a punch to his face 😮

This is what it looks like Behind the Scenes when an actor is being punched in the face.

By combining good acting with good camera angles and movement it can look like the character took a massive punch without them even getting hit by anything!

Shots like these require a lot of planning and coming up with a fight choreography.

Faking punches is one of the many things we can accomplish as filmmakers.

What’s your favorite cheat or fake that filmmakers use?

E X T R E M E J I B S crew shooting a Louis Vuitton commercial! 🙌

They were using a ServiceVision Scorpio 38’ crane!

The Scorpio 38’ is a telescopic crane.

Meaning the crew can change the length of the crane in the middle of the shot.

This allowed them to extend the cranes arm after they came up to the end of the dolly track and continue as one long shot.

Giving them a total of 80+ feet of travel!

The camera was controlled using a Freefly Mōvi XL Gimbal.

Genius hack for Camera Assistants!

Before starting a shoot, take measurements of all the heights your different sized tripod legs stand at.

Mark these heights on the back of your tape measure

So that when your DP is setting up their shot using a Director’s Viewfinder or a viewfinder app on their phone, you know right away which tripod legs you need!

A super simple but genius hack

Need sunlight? No problem!

Watch how Cinematographer Johnny Derango shot an Aputure 1200d directly at camera through an airplane window.

He was moving the plane on a Gimbal while the light was stationary.

The result were these beautiful flares seeping into the camera lens that look like they were coming from the sun!
