Breck Costin

Breck Costin His private practice, BCC Associates, is the premiere couple-counseling practice in Los Angeles. He has been married to his current wife for over fifteen years.

For over thirty years, Breck Costin has worked with well-known actors and directors, Fortune 500 companies, therapists, individuals, and families as a life coach, personal development trainer, and provocateur. Breck has lectured widely and is known internationally for his focus on emotional freedom, liberation, and creativity. As a life coach, Breck relies on a body of experience that includes ov

er twenty years as a pioneering seminar leader who has worked with thousands of people. In addition, he has over twenty years experience in private practice encouraging people to realize their personal, career, and spiritual aspirations. His primary interest lies in helping people to pinpoint where they are stuck and then collaboratively find creative solutions. “These days,” he says, “some call it being a coach, which is an ok term, but I have always thought of myself more as an instigator or a provocateur.”

Through honest and diligent exploration, Breck works to contest the beliefs that have not been challenged, examine the answers that have gone unquestioned, and confront the superstitions that have been deemed holy. His style is direct and compassionate, and his focus allows clients to dismantle their fantasies so they can develop a genuine sense of what is (and isn’t) possible. “Your fantasies must die,” he says, “for your dreams to come true. Living a conscious life is understanding the context from which you live and beginning to make choices that are more consistent with your true worth.”

Breck’s practice is equally grounded in his personal experience. He is raising two young children and has a grown daughter, has struggled with divorce, the loss of 2 brothers and both parents. The mistakes and challenges in his own life serve as portal allowing him direct insight and compassion into his client’s struggles and joys. Because of the depth of his personal and professional experiences, Breck is able to bring individually-tailored insight and respect to the process and help his clients to feel safe in navigating life’s more difficult straights. His belief is that tackling “one’s life and one’s deficiencies is heroic. It often feels like a crusade that takes all we’ve got, so part of what I offer my clients is the discovery of why the battle can be so tough.” What clients often discover is that what they had feared could be their greatest weakness might in fact be their paramount strength. Breck has also served as a consultant to many therapists and many top clinicians. He has consulted organizations including NASA, JPL, major corporations, professional and college sports teams, and a been a featured guest on cable television and radio. He is the founder of the Absolute Freedom Seminar, a three-part seminar that has helped thousands of individuals to see their lives with new clarity, freedom from unwanted patterns of behavior, and love. Breck is currently at work on a new book that will combine a personal memoir with many of the core philosophies he has developed as a life coach. He has been honored for his work with at-risk youth and served on the board of Shane’s Inspiration, an organization dedicated to eliminating bias against children with disabilities. Breck is also a co-founder of an exciting new company called SmartyPants, which develops vitamin supplements for children and provides parents with the tools and products to maximize their children’s brain health. bccfreedom.com

The Death of Democracy
The model for our children for the past year has been poisonous vitriol, aimed at everyone and anyone who stood in the way. This unqualified bully, stupid and with an inability to complete a full sentence, has been elected president. He has modeled the worst possible behavior and this will teach the ignorant to think it is the path to success. His children are nothing more than pay-rolled lemmings with no ability to think for themselves, who think that climate change is just weather and that killing endangered animals for sport is somehow manly. Ivanka, an advocate for women’s rights, has stayed silent throughout the campaign about her Father’s misogynistic attitude and behavior towards women. This is a statement about the America we live in, where disgusting behavior is rewarded and incompetency is over-paid. (Pollsters are just another piece of evidence that we pay dearly for incompetence.)

So many of us are in shock. Like any shocking loss there is that time of disbelief and desire to believe this didn’t happen. And like the stages of grief, it is the road we must travel. Disbelief, anger, bargaining, depression and eventually acceptance.

The hardest in this case is the last, acceptance. But without asking you to skip steps there is profound value in acceptance. We are being asked to accept the America we live in today, not The America of Yesterday or even The America of Tomorrow, but today. Acceptance does not mean resignation. It does not mean giving up. It does not mean stop fighting for higher principals or stronger ethics. It means to understand and accept the direction in which the train is moving and to get in front and lay some track.

America is a naïve country, which makes it very easy to market to. Marketing to America is a very simple recipe: put in some greed, vanity, and a healthy pinch of entitlement and you have America every time. We are a country divided and we have been divided for quite some time; now it has just been formalized. Donald Trump in his own arrogance and need for attention is ignorant to the political landscape, he doesn’t understand well enough to know that when you divide a country it will becomes vulnerable. And we are vulnerable. Russia know this all too well, as it has already watched its own country fall apart to division. Putin is a happy guy with the outcome of our election.

There will be many pieces written on the campaign and on this election. There will be college courses for years to come, marking this as a precedent setting case study. This for me is not a time of protest but a time of bed rest. We must look to the people we love. We must look to the families we need to protect. There is nothing to get up in arms about today, rather today find something or someone to wrap your arms around.

JUDINI

Yesterday Judy Babcock “Judini” a very dear friend of Jen’s and mine passed away unexpectedly…Jen makes up nicknames for people she loves and she named Judy “Judini”…Her passing is shocking and heartbreaking. She was a blithe spirit a powerhouse of energy and curiosity and damn, she will be missed! Judy lived in Santa Barbara and I had driven up and spent the day with her just a few weeks ago…and she was good, I wouldn’t say great but good.

She was a native New Yorker and had all the energy and intrusion of a New Yorker, but she also had all the spirituality and enjoyed the indulgences of Santa Barbara…I don’t think there was a time that I called her that she wasn’t getting a massage or reflexology. Like a New Yorker she was able to multi task-talk on the phone and get massaged. She lost her husband Phil (The love of her life) many years ago. He was killed by a teen driver while he and Judy were biking…Judy’s heart was broken but her spirit endured. She lost both of her parents in the last several years and I am not sure, however in the last few years if her sprit was able to transcend her heartbreak.
People come in and out of our lives and leave their mark on our hearts, Judy came in and never left…She was part of our family…
So many will miss her.

There will be much said and much written about David Bowie and the profound influence he had on the world of music and the world in general. I too will take my place in that long line as one who was touched by the man, the musician, the artist. He first inspired us to be our most outrageous selves, to explore and celebrate our sui generis differences and in that way to feel more connected to one another. He was so very private in a world that valued so much publicity, and yet it was that privacy that allowed us to honor our own shyness. He was an artist who aged beautifully and was a testament to one who had found his path and stayed true to it. You never felt like you had a piece of him. He was protective of those sacred parts and it made you feel as if maybe you should be protective of your own sacred parts.

Whether as Ziggy Stardust or in his un-costumed self he was benevolent and enduring in his creative expression, I never saw him in person and of course now I wish I did. I sang his songs to myself and in the shower. I accepted and expressed the androgynous part of myself much in part to his leadership. I, like so many others, was heartbroken to hear of his passing. I didn’t know I would be, but when I heard it stopped me in my tracks. Yes, I loved his music and I loved his artistic freedom, but what really got me was the loss of this gentle soul, a soul that the world is in desperate need of…
