When Love Isn’t the Problem

Love matters.

Communication matters.

Commitment matters.

But if every interaction becomes about responsibilities, schedules, problems, and obligations, even good relationships can start to feel heavy.

Sometimes the solution isn’t another serious conversation.

Sometimes it’s remembering how to enjoy each other again.

Most of us understand that trust can be lost.

What we sometimes forget is that access can change too.

Not every relationship stays the same forever. Not every person keeps the same level of influence, closeness, or permission to enter our lives.

Access isn’t a reward.
It’s not a punishment.

It’s a reflection of what has been built, maintained, and protected over time.

Sometimes the password changes because the system was compromised one too many times.

And sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop handing out unlimited access to people who repeatedly demonstrate they can’t be trusted with it.

Healthy relationships aren’t maintained through scorekeeping.

They’re maintained through mutual care.

I don’t think healthy relationships are built on perfection.

I think they’re built on goodwill.

Honesty.

Consistency.

Respect.

And maybe a little fun.

Once those things disappear, the relationship usually starts struggling long before anyone notices.

I wonder if we’ve confused attachment with significance.

Someone thinking about us for years doesn’t automatically mean the relationship was healthy.

Sometimes it means there was unfinished business.

Sometimes it means there was pain.

Sometimes it means there was growth.

And sometimes it simply means they haven’t let go yet.

Those aren’t the same thing.

Have you ever noticed that when you’re hurting, you start questioning things you normally wouldn’t?

You question your decisions.

You question your instincts.

You question your future.

Sometimes you even question your ability to handle what’s happening.

But maybe the problem isn’t that you’ve suddenly become less capable.

Maybe pain is just a really poor lens for seeing ourselves clearly.

When we’re hurting, everything can feel uncertain.

Including us.

So before you decide you can’t trust yourself…

Consider the possibility that you’re simply in pain.

And pain has a way of making strong people forget how strong they are.

I’ve been thinking a lot about balance lately.

I don’t think healthy boundaries exist to make us harder.

I think they exist so we can stay soft.

Because if every interaction, every disappointment, every disagreement, and every unexpected event has the power to steal our peace, we’re going to spend our lives emotionally tossed around by circumstances.

Healthy boundaries aren’t walls.

They’re parameters.

They’re the things that help us remain steady when life isn’t.

The goal isn’t to have a hard heart.

The goal is to have a soft heart that isn’t easily destabilized by what’s happening around it.

I think that’s what healthy boundaries are really protecting.

Not our ego.

Not our pride.

Our peace.

Your brilliant, beautiful mind has a job it loves to do.

It looks for patterns. It notices inconsistencies. It evaluates character, intentions, and opportunities. It helps protect your heart.

Your heart has a different job.

Its job is to connect, care, trust, and love. It isn’t always interested in the due diligence required for happy, healthy relationships.

That’s why your mind and your heart work best as partners, not competitors.

Division of labor can be a wonderful thing.
