A pretty good take on the situation

In May 2003, just weeks after the start of America’s ill-fated war in Iraq, filmmaker Errol Morris released “The Fog of War”, a powerful documentary about Robert S. McNamara, who served as US Secretary of Defense during the early years of the Vietnam War.

Sharing lessons from his tenure at the helm of the Pentagon, McNamara didn’t mince words: he conceded that the US was “wrong, terribly wrong” about its rationale to go to war in Vietnam, echoing what he had stated in his 1995 memoir. But he didn’t stop there. McNamara implied that the US might have committed war crimes in Vietnam and questioned the legitimacy of any intervention “if we can’t persuade nations with comparable values of the merit of our cause”.

The events that led to the US decision to wage war on Iraq, sadly supported by the UK and others, reaffirmed some of McNamara’s timeless warnings.

More than two decades later, it feels like the US, in its decision to attack Iran, has once again chosen escalation without clear goals, replacing reasonable judgement with hubris.
