Here's an interesting application of soundfield recording.
This mic is similar to an ambisonic mic, but where an ambisonic mic has 4 capsules (wxyz, or wyzx for AmbiX), this has two, front/back, so it doesn't encode height or left/right.
Like an ambisonic mic, through a process of summing and subtracting, this mic can model a number of different mic patterns and can encode depth.
Unlike popular ambisonic mics that tend to be small or medium electret capsules, but this is a large diaphragm condenser, so while the application is more limited, the recording quality w̶i̶l̶l should be higher*.
It's funny how there seem to be two camps in marketing these kinds of tools:
1) VR! THE FUTURE! REVOLUTIONARY!
2) RETRO! GET A U87 FOR CHEAP!
This one is from the developer of ReVibe and Eleven at Avid and the former CEO of Summit Audio, so that's why they fell in the second camp.
*Edit: We have not performed a hands-on test of the mic.
