Reflecting on you and your team’s current reality is important to:

• Determine your capacity,
• Identify unintended consequences, and
• Build shared understanding.

This can look like exploring your:

• Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities,
and Threats, or your,
• Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and

This matrix is one of my favorite ways to determine what to focus on when planning, whether it is strategy, a project, initiative, or campaign. Use it with your team to focus on what will be easy to implement and have a high impact.

What does success look like to you and your team? What will be different in 2 to 3 years if you really mobilize behind your strategic plan? This part of the ToP® strategic planning helps groups identify what the end result will be and work backwards. Through this workshop you and your group identify what actions will get them to success.

The ToP® Focused Implementation Workshop helps groups identify success measures, the current reality, actions to move from current reality to success, a one-year timeline, and implementation steps. I love helping groups reflect on the blocks and barriers as part of strategic planning. In fact, analyzing blocks and barriers is good for any problem you are trying to solve. It helps you realize ideas and actions for getting over the barriers and moving closer to your solution and vision. This step of the strategic planning process helps members identify negative patterns and issues to take responsibility for the future. It takes focus off of the person and puts it on the road-block. Interested in strategic planning or have a problem you are trying to solve with your team, contact me for a free one-on-one.

The foundation of our strategic planning process is based on the Institute of Cultural Affairs, ToP® method, which is a structured process to help an organization align its choices with its purpose. It moves the group from its vision to action and incorporates different types of strategic thinkers, which is important for a robust plan. The process can be modified to your group’s needs.

Facilitator means to “make easy”. As a facilitator of group process and meetings my goal is to:

• Guide the group through problem solving,
• Evoke group creativity,
• Manage group dynamics,
• Honor all voices, and
• Co-create a process with you.

All of this is to ensure that you, as a leader, can focus on the what, while we focus on the how. This Chinese Proverb evokes in me what facilitation can do, which is to engage group members, so they have ownership over their decisions.

Having trouble with aligning your team members? Having trouble moving forward with action because you are stuck in discussion? The Institute of Cultural Affairs’, Technology of Participation approach to strategic planning and action planning is one of my favorite tools to use with groups. It helps find the hidden connections and evokes creativity within a group. It aligns members ideas and builds consensus. If you and your team are struggling with alignment or action check out my blog post, Alignment and Action,

How do you and your team check-in with each other before jumping into work? I often find that taking the time to ask check-in question helps get all voices in the room and gives people time to warm-up. You can ask questions related to your meeting or not, either way, acknowledging and engaging your team and participants is an important part of collaboration.

Friday Reflections! I am grateful for opportunities to learn, facilitate, and facilitatively lead. What does the word facilitate mean to you? Officially it means to make easy. As facilitators and facilitative leaders we help groups to:

*Communicate,
*Critically think,
*Take collective action, and
*Build community.

Facilitating helps groups bridge the gap between what they are and what they could be! Imagine your team's possibilities and what life might look like if you were able to incorporate facilitating. How would it make your life easier as a leader or a team member? www.rootedinprocess.com

Have you heard the saying, you have to go slow to go fast? Is your group taking the time to build capacity, reflect, and coordinate? To reflect and regroup you might consider mapping your organizational journey with your team. This is a process of reflecting on how your group is aligned in the areas of values, skills, leadership, structure, mission, and communication. It can help to develop strategies for the future.
