This part of the ToP® strategic planning helps groups identify what the end result will be and work backwards. I love helping groups reflect on the blocks and barriers as part of strategic planning. In fact, analyzing blocks and barriers is good for any problem you are trying to solve. It helps you realize ideas and actions for getting over the barriers and moving closer to your solution and vision. This step of the strategic planning process helps members identify negative patterns and issues to take responsibility for the future. It takes focus off of the person and puts it on the road-block. The foundation of our strategic planning process is based on the Institute of Cultural Affairs, ToP® method, which is a structured process to help an organization align its choices with its purpose. It moves the group from its vision to action and incorporates different types of strategic thinkers, which is important for a robust plan. The process can be modified to your group’s needs.

Facilitator means to “make easy”. As a facilitator of group process and meetings my goal is to:

• Guide the group through problem solving,
• Evoke group creativity,
• Manage group dynamics,
• Honor all voices, and
• Co-create a process with you.

All of this is to ensure that you, as a leader, can focus on the what, while we focus on the how. This Chinese Proverb evokes in me what facilitation can do, which is to engage group members, so they have ownership over their decisions.

How do you and your team check-in with each other before jumping into work? I often find that taking the time to ask check-in question helps get all voices in the room and gives people time to warm-up. You can ask questions related to your meeting or not, either way, acknowledging and engaging your team and participants is an important part of collaboration.
