These may look bite-sized, but I wouldn't recommend eating them.

They're small biomaterial pieces I'm making for an upcoming after-school program, where students will explore fungi not just as organisms, but as a new class of materials.

Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected object to change the way we think about what's possible.

Most people know fungi as something on a pizza or growing in the woods.

I see something different.

I see fungi as teachers.

At ROOT WISE REPAIR, I’m exploring how fungi can inspire safer materials, new ways of solving old problems, and better choices for the future.

That doesn’t start with selling products.

It starts with asking good questions, running experiments, and listening to people who work with these challenges every day.

Every step forward teaches us something.

Every experiment points to the next one.

That’s how innovation grows—one observation at a time.

I’m excited to see where this journey leads and grateful for everyone who’s been willing to ask, explore, and learn alongside me.

Curiosity invited.

Dissolving chitosan.
Not the most glamorous part of biomaterials development, but often one of the most important.

Chitosan serves as the backbone for a surprising range of fungi-derived materials, from films and hydrogels to a variety of emerging biomaterial applications.

At this stage, it's less about having all the answers and more about creating the conditions for the next iteration to emerge.

What will it become? That's the question that keeps me coming back to the lab.

Did you know fungi have survived all five of Earth's major extinction events?

While entire ecosystems collapsed around them, fungi adapted and kept going.

I find that endlessly fascinating. Not because it means we should "use" fungi for something new, but because it means there's an entire kingdom of life that's been quietly mastering resilience for longer than almost anything else alive today.

Sometimes the most important lessons aren't about extracting value from nature. They're just about noticing what's already been figuring things out, right below our feet, the whole time.

What if fungi could become part of the future beyond food?

Not just mushrooms on pizza — but new materials, new ideas, and new ways of designing things we use every day.

Been experimenting with fungal biomaterials through ROOT WISE REPAIR and am exploring a small community/student pilot program around:🍄 fungi🧪 biomaterials🛠️ hands-on prototyping🌎 future sustainable design

Still early-stage. Still experimental, but I believe fungi may eventually help shape everything from packaging and insulation to transportation and protective materials.

The future may indeed be fungi.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been spending a lot of time in the lab working with fungi-based materials.

What’s interesting is how often new possibilities show up during the process—sometimes in ways we didn’t plan for.

We’re still in that phase of testing and learning, but it’s opening up exciting directions.

Sometimes there’s no need to create a form—you just stop.

This is mycelium, the root system of fungi. It grows quietly beneath our feet, forming networks of tiny threads called hyphae.

These threads move nutrients, bind materials together, and adapt to whatever they encounter—soft, rigid, or somewhere in between.

This isn't shaped. It's preserved.

Sometimes the work is simply to marvel, observe, and ask:
What is fungi trying to teach us?

Beneath the soil, there’s an intelligence at work—gathering, connecting, holding things together.
