To drive or not to drive...

Aging sometimes presents obstacles in many forms. Any time health becomes limited and privileges have to be eliminated, it can cause conflict within the individual and/or family. For those who have been driving for 60+ years, the thought to "give it up" can be devastating.

Unfortunately, everyone is different when this discussion comes into play. Some elderly will accept the reasons to no longer drive. Others may become angry and upset by the mere suggestion. Those with dementia may not understand and think they are fine to drive.

Talk to their healthcare provider about how to address the topic with your loved one. It might mean that their healthcare provider has to put it down on paper that their patient can no longer drive and the medical reasons behind this decision. This helps to take the pressure off of you so your loved one isn't upset with you.

It is important to note that those with dementia have been known to leave their home, drive away, get lost, and be found in another state. Those with vision loss can't see well enough to be a safe driver. Others who have neuropathy or mobility issues with their legs may not be able to make good reactive movements between the gas and brake pedal in a vehicle. All of these situations could be grounds for elimination of their active driver's license.

If a vehicle stays at the home of your loved one but they aren't allowed to drive, be sure the keys are either taken away, hidden, or in a lock box of some sort.

🩷Mother's Day is coming up this coming Sunday, May 10th.🩷

For many of us we are able to celebrate with our Mother's in some way. But for others who have lost their Mother's, it can be hard.

We feel that special occasions that focus on those that we no longer have in our life are still an opportunity to celebrate. Remembering your loved ones, honoring their legacy, keeping with favored traditions, looking at photo albums, and sharing special memories are ways to feel a little closer to them. They may be gone, but not forgotten.
