A tax deadline is not a tax plan:

For many calendar-year taxpayers who make estimated payments, the next federal estimated-tax payment is due September 15.

The most important planning should happen before you submit the payment. The tax payment is only one part of the financial picture.

A stronger question is: after the payment is made, does the business still have the cash it needs for payroll, vendors, inventory, materials, debt, and Q4 opportunities?

At Duncan Financial Solutions, we help business owners connect tax planning with cash-flow forecasting and the broader operating plan.

Making the payment matters, but understanding how it affects the rest of the business is leadership.

September 15 planning should not begin on September 14.

For many calendar-year business owners, the third estimated tax payment is due September 15.

August is the time to review:
Year-to-date profit, updated revenue projections, owner distributions, payroll and contractor costs, tax reserves, equipment or technology purchases, and expected Q4 cash flow.

Tax planning should not happen separately from business planning.
A major purchase may affect cash flow.
An owner distribution may affect the tax reserve.
A strong quarter may change the estimated payment.
A slower collection cycle may change when cash is available.

At Duncan Financial Solutions, we help owners connect taxes, cash flow, profitability, and operations throughout the year.

Make the September payment part of the plan, and not a disruption to it.

A busy medical practice is not automatically a financially healthy practice:

MGMA reported that 84% of medical groups had higher year-to-date operating costs than at the same point in 2025.

At the same time, only 47% reported higher revenue. Thirty-six percent reported a revenue decline.

Read more here: https://www.mgma.com/mgma-stat/operating-costs-keep-climbing-for-medical-practices-in-2026

That creates a difficult reality for clinic owners. Patient volume can increase while margins remain under pressure.

The goal is not simply to keep the clinic busy, but to build a sustainable practice that supports patient care, the team, and the owner’s financial future.

Your practice deserves a financial strategy as intentional as your patient care.

A full construction pipeline is not the same as profitable work:

Associated General Contractors of America reported that input prices for new nonresidential construction remained sharply higher than a year earlier in June.

Read more here: https://news.agc.org/category/economics/

Even when material prices decline in one month, the cost assumptions behind a bid may still differ significantly from the costs a contractor ultimately incurs.

Construction owners should be asking:
-Are the estimates based on current material and labor costs?
-Do contracts address price escalation appropriately?
-Are change orders documented and billed quickly?
-Is billing keeping pace with completed work?

Backlog creates opportunity. Job costing, billing discipline, cash flow forecasting, and margin monitoring determine whether that opportunity translates into financial strength.

Before adding another project, confirm that the current work is producing the return you expected.

Back-to-school spending is expected to reach record levels in 2026!

That is good news for many retailers, but a large spending season does not remove the need for margin and inventory discipline.

The National Retail Federation expects families with K–12 students to spend a record $43.3 billion this season (more here: https://nrf.com/media-center/press-releases/majority-of-back-to-school-shoppers-get-a-head-start-on-the-season).

At the same time, shoppers remain focused on affordability:
-Forty-six percent of shoppers who still have purchases to make are waiting for better deals.
-Twenty-three percent are spreading purchases out to manage their budgets.
-Nearly half plan to buy only the essentials needed for the start of school.

For retailers, that means sales volume alone will not tell the full story.

Owners should be reviewing:
Margin by product category, inventory turnover, promotional discounts, markdown exposure, and cash tied up in unsold merchandise.

The strongest sales season is the one that produces both revenue and healthy cash flow.

Let’s make sure seasonal sales are strengthening the business, and not just moving inventory.

AI is not automatically an investment until it produces a measurable business result, it is an expense.

A recent OnDeck and Ocrolus survey found that 61% of small businesses are using AI, and 91% of those users report a positive business impact (more here: https://www.ondeck.com/small-business-trends)

But another 2026 survey found that 70% of small-business owners believe they need more training to use AI productively.

The lesson is not that businesses should avoid AI, but that adoption needs a business case.

Before purchasing another tool, ask:
-What specific process are we improving?
-How much time or money does that process currently require?
-What result should improve?
-Who is responsible for implementation?
-How will accuracy and security be monitored?
-What would make us expand, redesign, or cancel the tool after 90 days?

AI can reduce rework, improve productivity, and support better decision-making, but only when the business measures outcomes.

The most expensive money is often the money a business needs in a hurry:

The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 report found that small-business financing conditions remained restrictive during the first half of the year. Loan originations declined, while business credit-card borrowing increased.

Learn more here: https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/2026-07-mpr-part1.htm

Credit can be a valuable business tool, but high-cost revolving debt should not become the default solution for predictable cash-flow needs.

Before a business needs outside capital, the owner should understand:
-How much capital may be needed?
-When will it be needed?
-What specific purpose will it serve?
-How will the business repay it?
-What happens if the return takes longer than expected?
-Can receivables, expenses, or working capital be managed differently first?

A cash-flow forecast, current financial statements, a clear use-of-funds plan, and an existing banking relationship can create more options before the need becomes urgent.

At Duncan Financial Solutions, we help owners prepare for capital decisions before they become emergency decisions.

Your budget should help you lead. Let’s make sure it is working for you: duncanfinancialsolutions.com

One forecast is an expectation. Three forecasts are a management tool:

Business owners cannot control every change in customer demand, labor, pricing, interest rates, materials, or operating expenses. But they can prepare for more than one possible outcome.

A useful forecast should include:

The base case:
What happens if the business continues along its current path?

The growth case:
What happens if sales, projects, patients, or customer demand increase faster than expected?

The pressure case:
What happens if collections slow, costs rise, margins tighten, or a major customer delays payment?

For each scenario, the owner should understand the effect on cash, staffing, taxes, debt, inventory, and planned investments.

Recent Q2 surveys from the US Chamber of Commerce show strong growth expectations among small businesses alongside persistent concerns about inflation and cash flow, reinforcing the value of scenario planning. Learn more here: https://www.uschamber.com/small-business/small-business-weekly-forecast

Q4 does not begin on October 1!

It begins when business owners start making the decisions that will determine what Q4 looks like.

Inventory orders, hiring decisions, equipment purchases, software investments, pricing adjustments, and the list goes on and on.

The latest U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index found that 66% of small-business owners expect revenue to increase over the next year. At the same time, 57% identify inflation as their biggest challenge. Read more here: https://www.uschamber.com/co/start/strategy/small-business-index

That combination tells business owners something important: Opportunity and financial pressure can arrive at the same time.

August is the month to turn midyear results into a practical Q4 plan.

At Duncan Financial Solutions, we help owners connect forecasting, cash flow, profitability, taxes, and operations so the next decision is based on a plan, and not a last-minute reaction.

Every growing business eventually reaches a point where effort alone is not enough.

That does not mean the business is broken. It means the business has grown to a stage where the financial and operational systems need to grow, too.

At Duncan Financial Solutions, we help business owners review the financial and operational sides of their businesses so they can identify what is working, what is creating pressure, and what needs to change.

Growth should not create more confusion. With the right plan, growth can create more clarity.

If your systems have not kept up with your growth, let’s talk. Book a free call here: https://go.oncehub.com/duncanfinancialsolutions
