September has a funny way of sneaking up on business owners.

You look at the calendar and realize Q4 is almost here.

And suddenly all those things you said you were going to do this quarter start getting moved to the next one.

Before you do that, stop.

Not every unfinished goal deserves another 90 days of your attention.

Some things still matter.

Some need a different approach.

Some need to be delegated.

And some probably need to come off the list altogether.

That’s what a good quarterly review is for.

Not to beat yourself up over what didn't get done.

To look at what actually happened and decide what deserves to come with you into the next quarter.

Ask yourself:
What worked?
What didn't?
What changed?
What still matters?
And what am I continuing to carry simply because I haven't made the decision to let it go?

You don't need to enter Q4 with a longer list.

You need to enter it with a clearer one.

A BUSINESS COACH SHOULDN’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS.

That immediately challenges the idea that you hire a coach because they know more about your business than you do.

If you’re looking for someone to come in and tell you exactly how to run your business, I might not be the coach for you.

Because here’s the truth:

You know your business better than I ever will.

You know your customers.
You know your industry.
You know your team.
You know what you want this business to become.

My job isn’t to have all the answers.

My job is to ask the questions you may not be asking yourself.

To challenge the answer when it sounds a little too comfortable.

To help you look at the numbers instead of relying on what you think is happening.

To remind you what you said mattered when the day-to-day starts taking over again.

And sometimes, to say:

“Okay, but why?”
..and wait for the real answer.

A good coach doesn't build your business for you.

They help you become better at building it.

And eventually, you shouldn't need your coach for every decision.

You should be making better ones because of the work you've done together.

That’s the ROI that keeps paying long after the conversation ends.

A BUSINESS COACH IS AN EXPENSE.
UNTIL THEY HELP YOU MAKE A DECISION THAT PAYS FOR THE COACHING.

Hiring a business coach costs money.

Let’s just start there.

And if you’re running a business, you should absolutely be asking:

What am I getting in return?

Sometimes the ROI is easy to see.

You finally raise the prices you’ve known were too low.

You stop pouring money into something that isn't producing.

You make the hire that gives you capacity to take on more business.

You tighten up a process that’s been costing you time and money every week.

You focus on the right opportunity instead of spreading your resources across five of them.

And sometimes the return is harder to put on a spreadsheet.

You make a difficult decision three months sooner.

You stop second-guessing yourself.

You have someone who will challenge an assumption before it becomes an expensive mistake.

You actually follow through on the goals you keep saying matter.

A good business coach isn't there to run your business for you.

They're there to help you become better at running it.

And over time, better decisions compound.

So yes, coaching is an investment.

The better question is:

What is it costing you to keep trying to figure everything out on your own?

YOUR BUSINESS ISN’T BROKEN.
YOU’VE JUST OUTGROWN THE WAY YOU’VE BEEN RUNNING IT.

That speaks directly to someone who has already built something successful. We're not telling her she's failing. We're recognizing that what worked at one stage may not work at the next.

There’s a point in business that doesn’t get talked about enough.

You’re not struggling to get your first client.

You’ve proven people will pay you.

You’ve built a reputation.

There’s money coming in.

From the outside, things might look pretty good.

But you know the business has more in it.

And lately, you’ve started realizing that getting to the next level is going to require something different from you.

Maybe you need to hire.

Maybe you need better systems.

Maybe you need to get serious about your numbers.

Maybe you need to stop being involved in every decision.

Or maybe you know where you want to go, but you haven't figured out how to get from here to there.

That doesn't mean what you've built isn't working.

It may mean you've outgrown the way you've been running it.

And that's a very different problem to solve.

This is one of my favorite conversations to have with business owners because we're not starting from scratch.

“I think we’re doing pretty good.”

Maybe you are.

But one of the things I ask business owners to do is get past thinking they know how the business is doing.

Look at it.

What did you say you wanted to accomplish this quarter?

Where did you expect revenue to be?

What were you going to sell?

Who were you going to hire?

What were you going to stop doing?

And where are you now?

This isn’t about beating yourself up because a goal didn’t happen exactly the way you planned.

Business changes. Priorities change. Sometimes the plan SHOULD change.

But you need to know the difference between making an intentional adjustment and simply getting busy and losing sight of the goal.

That’s why we don’t just make a plan and stick it in a folder somewhere.

We come back to it.

We look at what happened.

We talk about what worked, what didn’t and what needs to change.

Then we decide what happens next.

Your goals should be doing more than taking up space on a planning sheet.

Great.

Now comes the part that trips up a lot of business owners.

Actually doing it.

Not because you’re lazy.

Not because you don’t want it badly enough.

Because Monday comes. Clients call. Something needs your attention. An opportunity pops up. And that thing you decided was important starts sliding down the list again.

This is where accountability matters.

Not someone standing over you asking whether you did your homework.

Someone who knows what you said you wanted for your business.

Someone who remembers the priorities you committed to.

Someone who can ask:

“You said this mattered. What happened?”

And then help you figure out whether the plan needs to change or you need to follow through on the one you already made.

That’s a big part of coaching.

We get clear on where you’re going.

We decide what needs to happen next.

And then we keep moving.

Because a good plan sitting in a notebook doesn't grow a business.

There will always be more you could be doing in your business.

Another idea to chase.

Another problem to fix.

Another system to improve.

Another opportunity that suddenly feels urgent.

The goal isn't to get all of it done.

The goal is to know what deserves your attention next.

Because when you know that, something changes.

You stop bouncing between 14 different priorities.

You stop second-guessing every decision.

And you stop ending the week wondering whether all that work actually moved the business forward.

You know where you're going.

You know what you're working on.

And you know why it matters.

That's what clarity gives you.

So heading into the weekend, don't make yourself another giant list.

Ask yourself one question:

What does my business need most from me next week?

If you know the answer, protect it.

If you don't, that's exactly the kind of thing we can figure out together.

You’re working.

That’s not the problem.

You’re answering the calls, taking care of clients, handling the issues, making decisions and doing all the things that come with owning a business.

And yet, some of the things you KNOW would move the business forward keep getting pushed to tomorrow.

Then next week.

Then next month.

That doesn’t automatically mean you need better time management.

It might be priorities.

It might be delegation.

It might be a decision you haven’t made.

It might be that you’re trying to grow the business using the same habits and systems that got you to this point.

That’s the part we need to figure out.

Because I can give you another planner, another system or another list of things you SHOULD be doing.

But if we don’t identify what’s actually getting in the way, you’ll eventually end up right back here.

That’s why I start with a Clarity Call.

We look at where your business is, where you want it to go, and what’s standing between the two.

Sometimes you’re closer than you think.

You just need someone outside the business to help you see it.

You had a plan when you sat down this morning.

Then the phone rang.

A client needed something.
Someone had a question.
An issue came up that apparently couldn't wait.
And somewhere along the way, the thing you actually wanted to accomplish today got pushed aside.

Sound familiar?

Here's the thing: you weren't unproductive.

You worked all day.

But there's a difference between getting a lot done and making progress on the things that will actually move your business forward.

And when you're the owner, the day will happily fill itself with things that need your attention.

The question is whether you're deciding where your time goes, or everything around you is deciding for you.

So before you automatically move today's unfinished priority to tomorrow...

Ask yourself what kept it from happening today.

Because if nothing changes, tomorrow's list might look a whole lot like today's.
