Next up in our Interview Tips series: understanding the total compensation package.

Salary is incredibly important, and you want to make sure your salary is fair considering your geographic location, position applied for, and experience. However, there are other things to consider that may increase or decrease total compensation. Some are more obvious and others less so.

For example, employer contributions to health insurance, professional liability coverage, and 401k matching will increase total compensation. Being responsible for purchasing client materials and not being reimbursed for mileage and travel time will decrease total compensation.

Other considerations:
- How much PTO is offered and what are the limitations to using it?
- Who is responsible for purchasing materials for sessions, such as reinforcers? Are these expenses reimbursable?
- Are you required to use your own cell phone and data plan, or is this company provided?
- Are you reimbursed for mileage or travel time?
- Are professional development opportunities provided, and are they reimbursable?
- Does the company reimburse for licensure and/or certification-related fees, or is this your responsibility?

Ultimately, your personal situation and preferences will determine the best fit for you!

The need for ABA services doesn't always stop when a client reaches a certain age. In fact, needs may become more complex as our clients develop. We believe that ABA programs should continue to grow with the individuals we serve to meet their changing needs throughout their lives.

Next up in our Interview Tips Series: Ask specific questions about orientation and ongoing professional development.

It's critical that you are properly oriented to a new company's policies and procedures as well as the expectations for your role in the organization. As ABA providers, we also have a responsibility to ensure we are continuously learning and growing as professionals so we can best meet the needs of our clients.

It's important to ask about the orientation process and how professional development is supported when interviewing for a new position. For example:

1. Do you have a formal orientation process?
2. How long is the orientation process, and what topics are covered?
3. How is professional development supported within the organization?
4. Is there funding available to pursue professional development?

That's why our team created an Interview Guide for ABA Providers and is launching an Interview Tips Series to promote the discussion of potential interview questions for BCBAs and behavior technicians to use to prepare for upcoming interviews and to find the right fit.

Many ABA providers are looking for a company that is aligned with their values and professional goals. In the interview, it's important to ask questions that help assess a company's culture and values. For example, you may want to ask about a company's mission statement and core values, as well as how the mission and values are honored via company policies and programs.
