Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001.

For a few members of the Cambridge Fire Department, this day is something they learned about in history books because they weren't yet born. For many of us, however, we still vividly remember where we were when we watched the events of that day unfold.

We remember the sacrifice of the 343 FDNY firefighters and the thousands of innocent lives lost. We remember the families who never saw their loved ones return home. We remember the courage, dedication, and selflessness displayed in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

As we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, let us also be proud of this nation, grateful for our freedoms, and committed to treating one another with kindness and respect.

🚒 Joint Vehicle Extrication Training 🚒

This week, members from Cambridge Fire joined firefighters from Deerfield Fire, Marshall Fire and Cambridge EMS for a hands-on vehicle extrication training exercise.

Our two newest members, along with newer members from each department, reviewed the fundamentals of vehicle stabilization, extrication techniques, and patient care. Meanwhile, more experienced crews tackled a series of challenging extrication scenarios, including multiple incidents involving a semi-trailer.

A special thank you goes out to Precision Towing for providing the vehicles used during training, as well as their heavy-duty wrecker, commonly known as a Rotator, to assist with our scenarios. Crews were given 10 minutes to stabilize the trailer before the wrecker arrived, providing a valuable opportunity to test the capabilities of our equipment and techniques. It also gave us great insight into the importance of working alongside our towing partners during complex incidents.

Training like this allows us to build confidence, strengthen interagency relationships, and better prepare for the challenging situations we may face on the roadway.

While we hope we never have to respond to an incident like the ones we trained for, we will continue to invest our time and effort into training so that when the call comes, we are ready to serve our community safely and effectively.

We are always looking for community members who are interested in serving their neighbors. Whether you have experience or are completely new to the fire service, we provide the training and support needed to become part of our 100% volunteer team. Cambridge VFD Chief

Your CVFD would like to announce that Fire Chief Joe Evans has stepped down as the Chief of the CVFD due to increasing professional commitments outside of the department. Evans will maintain honorary firefighter status with the CVFD.

Chief Evans first joined the CVFD in 1995, becoming chief in 2022. He has boldly guided the department through some difficult times over the past 4 years, dealing with outside political factors that sought to disband the CFD. He was also vital in securing donations to have our Tender 6 remounted in 2025 – at no cost to taxpayers. Evans brought much experience and dedication, which was evident during his tenure as firefighter, officer, assistant chief, and chief. We want to thank Joe for all he has done for our department and wish him well in his work outside of the fire department.

In Evans’ place, Shane Johnson has been elected the next Chief of the CVFD. Johnson has been a member of the CVFD since 2015 and a member of Deerfield VFD from 2007-2015. Johnson was born and raised in Cambridge and is a paramedic lieutenant with the City of Sun Prairie. He also has 22 years of experience in emergency medical services and is excited for the opportunity to lead this fine department!

🚒 Cambridge Fire Department Annual Mailer 🚒
Residents should be receiving the Cambridge Fire Department's annual fundraising mailer information in their mailboxes soon. This fundraiser helps support our department's operations, training, equipment, and our continued ability to serve the community when you need us most.
We would also like to apologize to any Town of Oakland residents who may have received the mailing in error. Due to a mailing list issue, some Oakland addresses were unintentionally included. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
Most importantly, we want to extend a sincere thank you to our residents, businesses, and supporters for your continued generosity and support throughout the years. Your contributions make a real difference and help ensure the Cambridge Fire Department remains ready to protect and serve our community.

Yesterday was our annual hose testing day. Every year, we pull thousands of feet of hose from each apparatus and test it at high pressure to ensure it is ready to perform when our community needs it most.

It's a long, labor-intensive process, but by performing the testing ourselves, we save the department the significant cost of hiring an outside service while maintaining the confidence that our equipment is safe, reliable, and ready for the next emergency.

A huge thank you to all of our firefighters who spent the day working hard, hauling hose, operating equipment, and making sure every section was properly tested. Your dedication and commitment help keep our department ready to answer the call at any time.

🚒📻 A Big Thank You to Lieutenant Dan! 📻🚒

No, not that Lieutenant Dan... okay, actually that Lieutenant Dan! 😄
The Cambridge Fire Department would like to send a huge thank you to Gary Sinise and the Gary Sinise Foundation for their incredible $40,000 grant, which allowed us to purchase 13 new portable radios to replace our aging fleet.

Our old radios had faithfully served the department for many years, but they were starting to show their age. Thanks to this generous support, our members now have modern, reliable communication equipment that helps keep firefighters safe and ensures we can continue providing the best possible service to our community.

As many of our fellow firefighters know, grant writing can take countless hours and sometimes feels like a second job. But when those efforts result in critical equipment upgrades without increasing the burden on local taxpayers, it's time well spent.

From all of us at the Cambridge Fire Department, thank you to Gary Sinise and the Gary Sinise Foundation for supporting first responders and investing in the safety of our firefighters and community.

🚒 Thank You, Compeer Financial 🚒

The Cambridge Fire Department would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Compeer Financial for awarding us a $7,500 grant through their Rural Emergency Response Department Grant Program.

This funding will help us replace several aging radios that are critical to emergency operations and firefighter safety. Reliable communication is one of the most important tools we have when responding to incidents, and these new radios will help ensure our members can continue serving the community safely and effectively.

Writing grants takes a significant amount of time and effort from our members, and balancing those responsibilities with emergency response, training, and family commitments can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, opportunities like this make that work worthwhile because they allow us to improve our equipment and capabilities while helping to reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers.

We are incredibly thankful for Compeer Financial's investment in rural emergency services and their support of departments like ours. Partnerships like these make a real difference in keeping our firefighters equipped and our community protected.

Today, our department extends our deepest condolences to the Eau Claire Fire Department as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

The loss of a firefighter is felt far beyond the walls of a single station. It touches the entire fire service family. Our thoughts and prayers are with their member's family, friends, and every brother and sister in the Eau Claire Fire Department during this difficult time.

May you find strength in one another, comfort in the memories shared, and peace in knowing your fallen firefighter's service and dedication will never be forgotten.
