We are a combination Fire Department comprised of career and volunteer firefighters who provide fire, rescue and emergency medical services to those who travel through our community and to our loyal citizens.

MEDIA RELEASE

On Tuesday September 8,2026 at approximately 8:30 p.m., the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to 4777 County Road in the Town of Norwich to assist the NYSP with searching for a missing 78-year-old woman with Dementia.

On arrival, efforts between multiple agencies sparked a coordinated search effort. Search efforts consisting of searches on foot, UTV’s, drones, and K-9 units. With a unified command established, consisting of members from the NYS Forest Rangers, NYSP, Norwich Fire Department, Norwich Police Department, Oxford Fire Department, Sidney Police Department, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services, and County Search & Rescue Team, along with assistance from the Emergency 911 center, the 78 woman was located, not injured and was reunited with family members at 1:05 a.m. The woman was then transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The City of Norwich Fire Department would like to thank all personnel involved, the family members, and neighbors. As well as the department’s REHAB unit keeping all personnel hydrated throughout the incident.

On Thursday May 21, 2026, the City of Norwich Fire Department was honored at the 2026 SREMS (Susquehanna Regional EMS Council) Awards Banquet held at Binghamton General Hospital in Binghamton, NY. Amongst several other agencies being honored and recognized for multiple achievements and outstanding performances, the City of Norwich Fire Department received the “2026 Excellence in EMS Quality & Safety Award”. I would like to personally thank each and everyone of you for your outstanding dedication, and excellent performance every day in keeping the communities safe and taken care of during a time of need. Each day you are tasked with various challenges and obstacles in the world of EMS.
Your professionalism and the results each day show the quality of the EMS providers in which the City of Norwich and surrounding communities have. Keep up the great work!!!!

On Sunday May 10, 2026, at 9:14pm the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire located at 6 & 6A Griffin Street in the City of Norwich.
The duty crew responded and were on scene within 1 minute of alarm reporting a working fire with smoke and flames visible from two sides of a multi-family home. The home consisted of a large 2-1/2 story wood framed duplex. Crews entered the apartment building and were met by extreme temperatures, fire and smoke conditions within both apartments. Along with considerable fire on the exterior of the home and back porch. An aggressive coordinated interior and exterior fire attack was initiated, along with searching for occupants on all floors, ventilation, utility mitigation and water supply establishment. The fire department was able to bring the fire under control within an hour of arrival. Crews continued with overhaul, checking for extension and property conservation. Along with assisting the occupants of both apartments with the retrieval of personal belongings from the home. The home sustained extensive fire, smoke and heat damage to the rear of the building, interior first and second floors and majority of apartment 6A.

Norwich Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Sherburne Fire Department RIT, Oxford Fire with Engine company, North Norwich Fire with Engine company, Plymouth Fire for Engine company standby, Norwich Police Department, Codes Department, NYSEG, Chenango County Sheriffs, Norwich Fire Rehab, and American Red Cross.

An Investigation was conducted by members of the City of Norwich Fire Department, County Office of Emergency Services, Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature and involved discarded ashes from a prior campfire with the remaining ashes placed in a garbage bag on the rear porch of the home.

The Department would like to thank all members, mutual aid companies and outside agencies for your assistance. And a reminder to make sure your home has working smoke detectors.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters. Two occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene by EMS. None were transported.

On Monday April 13, 2026 at 5:00am the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to 104 Mitchell Street for the report of a structure fire. Early reports from the 911 center indicate that there was a civilian who had jumped from a second-floor window. The duty crew responded with Engine 234 and Ambulance 2393. Units arrived within 2 minutes from alarm reporting a working fire in a 2-story single family home with heavy smoke conditions pushing from the second-floor windows. Crews made entry into the 1st floor and were immediately met with zero visibility and extreme heat. An aggressive interior attack was initiated, along with a simultaneous search being conducted for additional occupants on all floors, ventilation, and the establishment of a positive water supply. The Norwich Police Department responded and arrived on scene at the same time as the fire department, discovering there were two fire victims located on the exterior of the home. Both victims had jumped from the second-floor windows prior to the arrival of units. Norwich Police Department assisted with the victims, while additional EMS crews arrived on the scene. EMS crews proceeded to treat and transport both victims to UHS Chenango Memorial. Both victims were later transferred to Upstate Medical in Syracuse for continued care. Both victims were being treated for smoke inhalation, burns, and injuries sustained from the incident. The home sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage throughout. There were no apparent working smoke detectors noted at the time of the fire or during investigation.
Norwich Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Sherburne Fire Department RIT, Oxford Fire with Engine Company, Chenango County OES with EMS and Fire Investigation support, Norwich Police Department, Norwich Water Department, Codes Department, NYSEG, Chenango County Sheriffs, Norwich Fire Rehab, Greene EMS, and the American Red Cross.

An Investigation was conducted by members of The City of Norwich Fire Department, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services, and the Norwich Police Department. The fire is being determined as accidental and caused by a chimney fire that extended into the home from an operating coal stove. There were no reported injuries to firefighters during the incident.

Units cleared the fire scene at 9:00am

City of Norwich Fire Department recognizes personnel for Life Saving Events following two Sudden Cardiac Arrest Incidents.

On Tuesday March 31,2026 the City of Norwich Fire Department was proud to announce the heroic actions of several firefighters and police officers who successfully saved the lives of two individuals on two separate dates after suffering sudden cardiac arrests.
On Wednesday October 29,2025 at 1:58am, the Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to Marconi Ave in the City of Norwich for the report of a 28-year-old male unresponsive. Within 2 minutes the duty crew was on scene. The male patient had gone unresponsive and then into a sudden cardiac arrest. Firefighters immediately initiated CPR, defibrillation, along with continued Advanced Life Support treatment and lifesaving measures.
On Friday February 27,2026 at 5:06pm, the Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to East Main Street in the City of Norwich for the report of a 63-year-old male in cardiac arrest. Within 1 minute the duty crew and a volunteer firefighter arrived on the scene. The male patient was confirmed to be in a cardiac arrest. Firefighters immediately initiated CPR, defibrillation, along with continued Advanced Life Support treatment and lifesaving measures.
Due to the quick actions, tragedies turned into “lives” being “saved”. In which could have ended in unimaginable sorrow. Thanks to these immediate interventions, both patients were successfully resuscitated and transported to the hospital for further care. Both patients are currently recovering/have been released.
"These incidents are powerful testaments to the skill, dedication, and immediate reaction of our firefighters," "Because these firefighters do not hesitate, and strive for victory every time, members of our community have been given a second chance at life. This is precisely what we train for, and I am incredibly proud of their actions."
Honored for lifesaving measures with “Certificate of Commendations” issued by the Fire Chief were Captain William Ballin, Captain Robert Boellmann, Firefighter Daniel Kerila, Firefighter Blake Parry, Firefighter Jon Manwarren, Firefighter Eric Olsen, Firefighter Evan Grainger, Firefighter Tanner Campbell, and Firefighter Jim Fowlston.
Honored with Certificate of Appreciation issued by the Fire Chief for continued support and assistance was City of Norwich Police Department Sergeant Tristan Rifanburg, Patrolmen Torin Lawrence, and Patrolmen Tyler King.

Inter-agency efforts between the Fire and Police Department occur daily, when every second counts to achieve positive outcomes. We appreciate the Police department and personnel.

The City of Norwich Fire Department urges all citizens to learn CPR and AED use, as immediate bystander action is the most critical factor in surviving sudden cardiac arrest.
