How are you caring for people today?

Caring can be such a dangerous word in the workplace. You don't want to pry into private lives or share too much personally. Yet, you want people to know that you do CARE about them. The easiest way to demonstrate care is through LISTENING. When you take the time to simply listen to someone else, that is a form of care. When people feel seen and heard, they feel cared for.

Over the last 15 years, I have been dedicated to studying emotional intelligence and how it impacts communication and relationships. I have learned a lot of lessons. Tried a lot of strategies. And last year, I finally felt like I put something together.

Expectations.

We have expectations about everything. Expectations over what people should say, do, even what they should wear. Yet, so many times we don't bother to state our expectations. We make assumptions that they are understood. That they are....common sense.

Yet, when we keep expectations to ourselves, people are bound to let us down. To not be able to meet our expectations. Because they don't even know what they are.

Emotional intelligence requires us to be honest with what is assumed and what is spoken. What is explicit. We must be focused on what expectations exist and how to clarify them to others. Otherwise, our relationships will diminish and trust will disappear.

The line between personal and professional can get blurry. Especially as we spend more time at the office than we get to spend at home with our families. One of the major components of effective communication is maintaining boundaries.

You have to able to be friendly with every person you encounter. Every coworker, colleague, supervisor, employee, and client. However, the word "friend" should truly be reserved for those whose relationship extends beyond the workplace.

Does that mean you can't have friends at work?

Well, many of us do. We have coworkers who we go to happy hour with and spend time with outside of work. We may even find those best friend at the workplace. AND we have to make sure that our workplace conversations and leadership don't suffer because of that. Being able to wear multiple hats is difficult and not everyone is capable of keeping the line drawn between personal and professional.

SO consider this....can I be friends with this person on Friday night and feel confident in giving them feedback on Tuesday morning? Can I support this person through a bad breakup on the weekend and still hold them accountable for work next week? Can I complain about my boss to this customer over the weekend and then try to renew their sale next week?

We have to always consider how these relationships are impacted by the work and the communication. Choose wisely. Sometimes being friendly is enough.

Emotional Intelligence goes beyond the idea of "feelings". Becoming a more emotionally intelligent human means being able to understand the complex system of interconnectivity between your brain (IQ), your emotions (EQ), and your communication (CQ).

When you are able to understand how these three components work together, you can learn to not only COPE with situations better, but you can learn how to communicate with IMPACT, and use your INFLUENCE towards a greater good.

This is why we believe so passionately in this work.
