I spent the past two days at the Women Lead Change conference, and one thing that stood out to me through conversations, observations, and even my own interactions is this:

More than anything, people want to feel seen.

Yes, the conversations mattered.
Yes, the networking mattered.
Yes, the opportunities mattered.

But underneath all of that, there was something even more human.
A need for real connection.

Not connection through the lens of what can you do for me.
Not from a place of what do they want from me.
Not relationships built only around opportunity.
Just two humans, being human.

A smile when you pass someone.
Eye contact.
A simple hello.
Taking a moment to really listen instead of thinking about what comes next.

Those little things matter more than we think.
Because at the end of the day, people may not remember every word you said, but they will remember how they felt around you.

Did they feel welcomed?
Did they feel noticed?
Did they feel like they mattered?

Sometimes networking can feel transactional.

But real connection is built in the small moments where people feel seen, heard, and valued.

In a world full of networking, be the person who makes people feel seen.

Last week, I was facilitating a leadership class, and I walked in with a plan. Clear flow. Activities mapped out. Timing dialed in. Ready to roll!

And early on, I could feel they needed something different than the direction I had planned to take. What I was about to move into next was not what the group needed most.

Then I had the thought: Do I stick to the plan, which feels safe because I know where it’s going and what to expect? Or do I trust my gut and go somewhere I didn’t prepare for, but the team clearly needed?

Let’s be real for a second. Adjusting might sound simple. It’s not. At least not for everyone.

You’re stepping away from what you know. From what you rehearsed. Into something you’re not fully sure how it will land.

There’s risk in that.
What if it falls flat?
What if I lose the group?
What if I take it the wrong direction?

I decided to adjust and stay in the parts they needed most. It turned into a much deeper, more honest discussion than what I had originally planned. And it was exactly what the team needed most.

It reminded me of something I see in leadership all the time:

It’s not just about having a plan.
It’s about being willing to step away from it, even when you’re not fully sure what happens next.

That’s the part people don’t talk about.
The discomfort, the risk. and the moment when you have to trust yourself without guarantees.

That’s leadership.

Not perfectly executing the plan, but being present enough to know when to shift and willing enough to take the risk when you do.

Where are you feeling that pull to adjust right now?

A lot of leaders think vulnerability means you have to “share more.”

It doesn’t.

Sometimes vulnerability is one sentence you avoid… because it makes you feel exposed.

It sounds like:

“I don’t have the full answer yet, but here’s what I do know.”
“I missed that. That’s on me.”
“Here’s what I’m worried about…”

That’s not a weakness.
That’s trust.

Because your team doesn’t need a perfect leader.
They need a real one they can follow.

What’s hardest for you to say out loud as a leader—“I was wrong,” “I don’t know,” or “I need help”?

Why do so many “small” issues end up escalated… instead of solved?

A lot of the time, it’s not because leaders don’t care.
It’s because they don’t know how to coach without taking over.

So the quickest path becomes:
“I’ll just fix it.”
“Just do it this way.”
“Bring it to me.”

And that creates a bottleneck. (And a tired leader.)

A simple coaching shift that builds ownership:
“Walk me through what you’ve tried so far.”
“What options do you see?”
“What’s your next step?”
“What do you need from me to move forward?”

That keeps you out of rescuer mode… and keeps the work where it belongs.

This is one of those skills that changes everything once leaders actually practice it.

What’s the bigger challenge where you work: leaders rescuing too fast, or employees escalating too fast?

Some leaders don’t “command the room.”
They steady the room.

They make it safe to speak up.
They don’t add heat.
They don’t rush to prove themselves.

And somehow… things just run better around them.

This is one of those leadership skills that changes the whole tone of a team once leaders actually practice it.

What do you respect more in a leader: energy, clarity, or steadiness?

You ever start a conversation to share a little feedback… and the next thing you know, there’s a lot of emotion in the room?

It goes from “quick insight” to tense… fast.

And once emotions spike (defensiveness, frustration, embarrassment, etc.)
it’s easy to get pulled into tone… instead of staying on the actual issue.

The move isn’t to ignore the emotion.
It’s to acknowledge it—and bring it back to what’s true.

“I can see this is frustrating.”
“Let’s slow down, here’s what I’m noticing, and I want to understand what happened.”

Now it stays a conversation… not a blow-up.
And you can actually solve the right problem moving forward.

This is one of those skills that changes everything once leaders actually practice it.

If you or your team need BT's Tough Conversations course to learn and practice these skills, lets talk.

What’s hardest for you: staying calm, naming the emotion, or getting back to the facts?

It sounds obvious… and yet this is where so many teams get stuck.
Because “clear” isn’t just saying the task.

It’s also saying what matters:
-what’s needed (the outcome)
-what it should look like (the standard/expectation)
-what to do moving forward (the follow-through)

Otherwise, people fill in blanks that often don't match the expectations.

A simple way to say it:
“Here’s what I need. Here’s what "good" looks like. And here’s what we’ll do if something gets in the way.”

This is one of those basics that changes everything once leaders actually practice it.

Where do expectations break down most where you work: quality, timelines, or follow-through?

When did leadership start meaning you have to react instantly?

Some of the strongest leaders aren’t the fastest.
They’re the calmest.

They take a breath.
They buy themselves five seconds.
They respond like someone who’s in charge of themselves first.

This is what BT is about: building leaders who can stay calm, clear, and consistent.

Where do you want more steadiness right now: in conflict, in decisions, or in boundaries?

The word “feedback” has the same effect as a Teams message that just says:
“Hi, Brittany”

Everybody’s like…
“Uh oh.”
“What did I do?”
“What is it now?”

That’s the problem: feedback has been trained to feel like trouble.
But it’s supposed to be guidance.

Make it normal. Make it factual. Make it curious.

“In today’s meeting, I noticed you interrupted a few times while others were talking. It looked like a couple of people stopped sharing, and we missed a few perspectives. Were you aware of that as it was happening?”

This is one of those deceptively simple skills that changes everything once leaders actually practice it.

In BT trainings, we practice feedback using real scenarios and real wording so it doesn’t feel awkward or intense .

What’s your first reaction to feedback: defensive, nervous, or relieved?
