When customers ask is it better to fix or buy a new HVAC-it is you to decide, but you need to know, that warranty DOESN'T cover labor. Its no my post, but this is exactly how the waranty for new hvac system works:
refrigerant leak but continued to work what killed the compressor.
Hvac part warranties are super sad. Basically, the manufacturer reimburses contractors for the cost of parts after an extended period.
The contractor needs to drive to your house in a company van by a guy paid by the hour with cull wages. An hour or two troubleshooting your system using tools the company bought. Then once a defective part is found, let's say a leaking indoor coil. Than he needs to go to the supply house and buy a coil at full price. He needs to drive back to your house. The guy needs to pump down the system and cut out the old coil. He needs to cut out the old filter dryer, which the warranty doesn't cover and replace it. He needs to use a brazing torch and braze, which isn't covered to braze in the new coil. He needs to use nitrogen and leak search his repair. Then he needs to use a vacuum pump and pump down the system, which takes a lot of time. Afterwords releasing the refrigerant, checking pressures, and normally adding a few pounds of refrigerant. Than he needs to drive back to the supply house and fill out all of the warranty paper work. Up to this point, this guy has lost a full day at your house, plus hundreds of dollars in material, using thousands of dollars worth of tools. The factory so far has given $0. After a few weeks, the factory will reimburse the contractor for the cost of JUST the indoor coil.
Overhead and labor is not covered by the factory warranty. This includes wages & benefits, fuel, vehicle expenses & repairs, insurance, materials, experience, the mortgage on the company shop, the utilities on the company shop, the wages for the office staff, all of the expensive tools the company had to buy to run the business, plus expensive software, training, and lastly the profit as all of these companies are for profit businesses.
So at the end that's how a "warranty" compressor replacement costs about 3k in labor.
