πŸ’° Funding Friday

As we honor Juneteenth and reflect on its significance, we are reminded that true progress requires not only freedom, but also access to opportunity, resources, and investment in communities.

The same principle can be applied to community work today.

Strong funding isn't just about sustaining programs.

It's about investing in people, building capacity, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for future generations.

As you pursue grants, donations, and partnerships, consider:

βœ” Who has access to resources?
βœ” Who is missing from the conversation?
βœ” How can funding help create more equitable opportunities?

Because sustainable change happens when investments reach the communities closest to the need.

🧰 Toolkit Thursday

🧺It's Picnic Day!

And just like a successful picnic requires more than a blanket and a basket, successful community change requires more than good intentions.

Think about your coalition's "picnic basket":
βœ” Data and assessment
βœ” Partnerships and relationships
βœ” Community engagement
βœ” Communication strategies
βœ” Evaluation and outcomes
βœ” Sustainability planning

When one ingredient is missing, the experience changes.

When they're all working together, great things happen.

Today's toolkit, the Community Tool Box by the University of Kansas! Why it works? Like a picnic basket, it's packed with everything you need! Check it out at https://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents.

🎢 Woahhh, We're Halfway There Wednesday 🎀

You know those songs...

The ones where you hear the first line and instantly turn the volume up.

Before you even realize it, you're singing every word like you're headlining a sold-out concert in your car πŸ˜†

For me, one of those songs is:

🎧 "Jeremiah was a bullfrog..."
(Joy to the World – Three Dog Night)

No warm-up needed. You're all in.

A few other unforgettable opening lines:

🎧 "Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world..." 🎡Don't Stop Believin' – Journey
🎧 "Almost heaven, West Virginia..." 🎡Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver
🎧 "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" 🎡Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
🎧 "Tommy used to work on the docks..." 🎡 Livin' on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
🎧 "A long, long time ago..." 🎡American Pie - Don McClean

And here we are β€” halfway there on the halfway day πŸ˜‰

It's amazing how a single line can unlock memories, emotions, and a full-volume singalong.

What's the song that gets you singing from the very first lyric? πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Š Trend Tuesday

🚨 When Branding Becomes a Behavior Cue

This week I'm highlighting a newly released (6/13) backpack designs from Sprayground that includes a concealed "stash pocket."

At first glance, it may seem like just another product feature. But from a prevention and public health perspective, it's a reminder that branding, design, and culture can influence perceptions and behaviors.

Think about it:
βœ” Products don't just sell features
βœ” They sell identities
βœ” They normalize behaviors
βœ” They shape what's viewed as acceptable, desirable, or even expected

Whether it's alcohol, ni****ne, cannabis, or other substances, marketing often extends far beyond the product itself.

That's why community scans matter.

They're not just about what's being sold.

They're about the messages being sent.

As prevention professionals, parents, educators, and community leaders, it's important to pay attention not only to the substances themselves, but also to the branding, imagery, and cultural cues that surround them.

Because culture influences behavior β€” often long before a decision is ever made.

πŸ”₯ Momentum Monday

We're halfway through the month already 😳

Are you where you thought you'd be?

Maybe you've made great progress. πŸŽ‰

Or maybe life happenedβ€”plans shifted, priorities changed, and progress came slower than expected.

That's okay.

As Michael Altshuler said:

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot."

The halfway point isn't a finish lineβ€”it's a checkpoint.

βœ” What's working?
βœ” What's not?
βœ” What needs to change?
βœ” What's your next best step?

You may not be where you hoped to be, but you're still in the pilot's seat.

Keep moving forward. There's still plenty of month left. πŸ’š

🌱 Sustainable Leader Sunday

There's so much to do... and so little time.

Graduation parties πŸŽ“
Family get-togethers ❀️
Summer plans β˜€οΈ
Competing priorities πŸ“…

Meanwhile...
The lawn needs mowing 🌱
You're down to your last clean pair of socks 🧦
And the science experiment growing in the back of the fridge may be developing its own culture πŸ˜…

Sound familiar?

This time of year can feel like a race to keep up.
But sustainable leadership isn't about doing it all.

It's about deciding what matters most right now.

The grass will grow.
The laundry will wait.
The fridge can probably survive another day.

The memories you're making with family and friends?

Those are harder to replace.

Give yourself permission to choose people over perfection this week.
Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do is simply be present. πŸ’š

πŸš€ Strategy Saturday

Preparing to meet with a potential funder, board member, donor, or community partner?

Remember: it's not always about you.

One of the most effective engagement strategies is the 80-20 Rule:

πŸ‘‚ Listen 80% of the time
πŸ—£οΈ Talk 20% of the time

Go into the conversation with curiosity.

Learn about:
βœ” Their priorities and interests
βœ” Their challenges and goals
βœ” What motivates them
βœ” How they define success

The more you understand their perspective, the better you can connect your mission to what matters most to them.

People invest in missions when they feel heard, valued, and connected.

So before your next meeting, spend less time perfecting your pitch and more time preparing your questions.

Because the strongest partnerships often start with listening.

πŸ’° Funding Friday

If you've attended my Move the Needle presentations, you've heard me say:

Funders don't want more data. They want confidence.

Confidence that:
βœ” You understand the problem
βœ” You've identified the right audience
βœ” Your strategy is informed by evidence
βœ” You can measure progress and impact

The strongest applications don't overwhelm reviewers with statistics.

Instead, they answer a few key questions:

πŸ“Š What does the data tell us?
πŸ’‘ What does it mean?
🎯 What are we going to do about it?
πŸ“ˆ How will we know if it's working?

Remember: Data is not the destination.

It's the starting point for insight, strategy, action, and outcomes.

Because at the end of the day, funders aren't investing in numbers.

They're investing in your ability to create change.
