📊 Trend Tuesday

From Overdose Awareness to Su***de Prevention 💜💙

Yesterday, we recognized International Overdose Awareness Day.

Today begins Su***de Prevention Month.

Two observances. Two complex public health challenges. And an important reminder that our prevention efforts don't always fit neatly into separate boxes.

Substance use and su***de can share risk and protective factors. Mental health, trauma, isolation, access to care, stigma, connectedness, coping skills, and supportive relationships can all be part of the bigger picture.

Every day, we have opportunities to connect our prevention efforts rather than silo them.

🤝 Strengthen connection and belonging.
🗣️ Normalize conversations about mental health and substance use.
💜 Reduce stigma around asking for help.
🧠 Build coping and resilience skills.
🏘️ Create environments that support health and well-being.
🔗 Make it easier for people to connect with support when they need it.

As we move from one awareness observance into another, maybe the trend worth watching isn't another new substance or statistic.

Maybe it's our growing understanding that prevention is connected.

🚀 Momentum Monday

Feel It. Then Carry It Forward. 💜

Today, August 31, communities around the world recognize International Overdose Awareness Day.

For many, today brings a lot of feelings.

💜 Grief for someone deeply missed.
😔 Sadness for lives cut too short.
😡 Frustration that preventable deaths continue.
🤝 Gratitude for those working every day in prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery.
✨ Hope that things can change.

And because it's Monday, I'm thinking about momentum.

What do we do with all of those feelings?

We can turn them into action.

Have the conversation.
Learn how to use naloxone.
Challenge stigma.
Support someone in recovery.
Remember the person behind the statistics.
Keep advocating for prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery.

Because tomorrow the purple lights may come down. The events will be over. The social media posts will begin moving down our feeds.

But the work doesn't stop when the observance ends.

💭 Momentum Monday Challenge: What's one thing you can carry forward from International Overdose Awareness Day into the other 364 days of the year?

We honor those we've lost by remembering them.

And we honor them by continuing to move forward. 💜

🌱 Sustainable Leader Sunday

The Kids Are Back in School…Now What? 🎒

Backpacks are packed. First-day photos are taken. The school buses are rolling again.

And after a summer of changing schedules, activities, travel, extra noise, and trying to keep all the plates spinning…there may finally be a little breathing room. 😅

So what should you do with it?

Maybe don't immediately fill it.

☕ Drink the coffee while it's still hot.
🚶 Take a walk.
📖 Read something just because you want to.
🧹 Tackle one thing that's been driving you crazy—not twenty.
🗓️ Reset your own routines.
😌 Or simply enjoy a little quiet.

Back-to-school season isn't just a reset for kids. It can be one for us, too.

Before the fall calendar gets completely packed, think about what you want this new season to look like.

They get a fresh start. Maybe you should, too. 🍎

📸 Strategy Saturday

Paint the Picture 🎨

Data matters. But numbers alone don't always help people see your community or understand your issue.

If you want partners, funders, decision-makers, or community members to act, help them see the bigger picture.

Combine:

📊 Data — What do the numbers tell us?
🗣️ Stories — What are people experiencing?
📍 Place — Where and how is the issue showing up?
📸 Observations — What are you seeing in stores, schools, neighborhoods, or community spaces?
💡 Context — Why does this matter here and now?

A statistic might tell us youth substance use is changing.

A community scan, local story, photo, quote, or trend can help people understand what that change actually looks like.

💡 Strategy Saturday Challenge: Could someone who doesn't live in your community understand your issue—and why it matters—based on the way you're telling the story?

Don't just present the problem. Paint the picture.

💰 Funding Friday: Match the Money to the Mission 🎯

A new grant drops and the first thought is often: “How can we make our work fit this funding?”

Flip the question: Does this funding fit our mission, community needs, and priorities?

Before applying, ask: Does it align with our goals? Do we have the capacity? And what happens when the funding ends?

Sometimes the best funding decision is not applying.

💡 Community Need → Mission → Strategy → Funding

Don’t change the mission to chase the money. Find the money that moves the mission.

🧠 Toolkit Thursday: Know Your Neuro

After having the chance to spend time with Dr. Crystal Collier last week in Michigan—and fangirl just a little 🤩—I had to highlight Know Your Neuro for Toolkit Thursday!

This free resource puts brain-based, social-emotional, and prevention education into practical tools that schools, caregivers, and communities can actually use. With videos, classroom activities, handouts, and resources designed for different developmental stages, Know Your Neuro helps connect the science of the developing brain to conversations about substance use, relationships, coping skills, decision-making, technology, and other high-risk behaviors. 🧠💡

I especially love that the resources aren't just about giving young people information—they give adults tools to help build skills, strengthen protective factors, and make prevention part of ongoing conversations. There are even ready-to-use school resources like the Family Code Workshop.

🐶🎶 Whoa, We’re Halfway There Wednesday: National Dog Day Edition!

Not too long ago, we celebrated the Dog Days of Summer with a canine-inspired playlist. Since today is National Dog Day, it only seems right to let the dogs take over the playlist again! 🐾

This time, we’re looking for songs with dog-worthy names in the title—the kind that could just as easily be called across the dog park. 😂

🎵 Roxanne – The Police
🎵 Lola – The Kinks
🎵 Maggie May – Rod Stewart
🎵 Layla – Derek and the Dominos
🎵 Jack & Diane – John Mellencamp
🎵 Ruby Tuesday – The Rolling Stones
🎵 Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – The Beatles
🎵 Hey Jude – The Beatles
🎵 Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
🎵 Bennie and the Jets – Elton John
🎵 Rhiannon – Fleetwood Mac
🎵 Rosanna – Toto
🎵 Valerie – Steve Winwood / Amy Winehouse
🎵 Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners
🎵 Jessie’s Girl – Rick Springfield
🎵 Mickey – Toni Basil
🎵 Buddy Holly – Weezer
🎵 Peg – Steely Dan
🎵 Brandy – Looking Glass
🎵 Maxwell’s Silver Hammer – The Beatles

🐕 Bonus challenge: Which one sounds MOST like a dog name? And what song belongs on the list because it shares a name with your pup?

Happy National Dog Day to the four-legged coworkers who contribute very little to the workload but somehow remain employee of the month. 🐾❤️

😮 Trend Tuesday: Nitrous Oxide Gets a New Look

During a recent environmental scan at a local v**e shop, something caught my eye: a 12-pack-style box that, at first glance, looked a whole lot like flavored bubbly water.

It was actually Infüzd nitrous oxide.

The brand markets large nitrous oxide cylinders for food and beverage preparation in flavors including Blueberry Lemonade, Aloe Grape, Banana Cream, Birthday Cake, Cereal Milk, Dulce de Leche, and more. Its website clearly states “DO NOT INHALE” and restricts access to those 21+, but the colorful flavors and beverage-style branding are worth paying attention to from a prevention perspective.

Why does this matter? Packaging and placement influence perception. When a product associated with serious misuse risks starts looking familiar, fun, flavorful, or similar to products we already see in coolers and convenience stores, it deserves a closer look.

The FDA has warned consumers not to inhale or recreationally use nitrous oxide products in any flavor or container size, citing risks including loss of consciousness, psychiatric effects, neurologic problems, blood clots, and death.

Sometimes the trend isn't a brand-new drug. It's a new way of making an old one look familiar.

🚀 Momentum Monday: Where Did August Go?!

Anyone else feeling that little end-of-summer panic creeping in? 😳

We’re nearing the end of another month. School is starting—or has already started. 🎒 The days are getting shorter. And suddenly all those things we were going to do “this summer” are staring at us from the to-do list.

Before you respond by trying to do all the things, remember: momentum doesn’t require finishing everything before the season changes.

Take a look at what’s still on your list and ask:

👉 What needs to happen?
👉 What would be nice to happen?
👉 What can officially move to the not-right-now list?

Then choose one thing to move forward today.

Summer ending doesn’t mean you’re behind. It just means we’re entering another season—and sometimes the best momentum comes from deciding what you're not taking with you. 🍂💛
