Ever wonder about that white, dusty coating on grapes fresh off the vine? That’s called bloom, and it’s completely natural. Grapes produce their own protective wax coating as they ripen, made up of natural compounds plus wild yeasts that live right on the skin. It’s part of what makes wild fermentation possible, since those very yeasts are what turn grape juice into w**e before any commercial yeast gets added. Bloom also helps seal in moisture and shield the fruit from sun and pests. So when you see grapes looking a little dusty on the vine, that’s nature doing its job, not a sign of anything sprayed on. A quick rinse and they’re ready to eat or press.
