Everybody is talking about the food truck owner whose truck caught fire and the fact that he said it wasn’t insured.⁣

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲.⁣

One of the most rewarding parts of my job isn't preparing tax returns.⁣
⁣
It's earning someone's trust.⁣
⁣
In 2019, an elderly widow walked into my office to file taxes for the first time on her own. Throughout their marriage, her husband had always handled the family's finances and tax returns. After he passed away, she suddenly found herself trying to navigate a tax system she had never needed to understand.⁣
⁣
That first year, we prepared what would become her final tax return as a married couple.⁣
⁣
From that point on, we took the journey together.⁣
⁣
Over the years, I helped her navigate the tax rules for surviving spouses, beneficiary paperwork, and every deduction and credit available to her. Their only child is permanently disabled, so there wasn't another family member to help shoulder those responsibilities.⁣
⁣
As the years passed, getting to my office became more difficult for her. Rather than asking her to make the trip, I started going to her.⁣
⁣
Because sometimes serving clients means meeting them exactly where they are.⁣
⁣
For several years, I believed she qualified to claim her permanently disabled adult son as a dependent. She wasn't convinced. For most of her marriage, her husband had always handled the taxes, and owing the IRS each year had simply become what they expected. Once she became the one signing the returns and writing the checks herself, those balances became much more personal.⁣
⁣
I never pressured her.⁣
⁣
Instead, each year we revisited the conversation. I answered her questions, explained the rules, and reassured her that claiming her son wasn't stretching the law. It was simply applying the tax law correctly based on her family's circumstances.⁣
⁣
Eventually, she trusted the process enough to move forward.⁣
⁣
We amended her 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 return.⁣
⁣

This wasn't about finding a loophole.⁣
⁣
It was about understanding the tax code, taking the time to ask the right questions, and giving a client the confidence to claim the tax benefits she had been entitled to all along.⁣
⁣
Moments like this remind me that tax and accounting has never been just about numbers.⁣
⁣
It's about relationships.⁣
⁣
It's about trust.⁣
⁣
And sometimes, the greatest value we provide isn't preparing a tax return. It's giving someone the confidence to make the right decision when they're ready.⁣

That's why I'll never stop asking questions.⁣
⁣
You never know where the next opportunity to help someone might be hiding.⁣

Yesterday, I encouraged everyone claiming federal tax exempt to review their payroll before July.⁣

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?⁣
⁣
You should review it if:⁣
⁣
✔️ You’re no longer eligible to claim exempt.⁣
✔️ Your income has increased.⁣
✔️ You owed federal taxes when you filed your last return.⁣
✔️ You’ve noticed little or no federal taxes coming out of your paycheck.⁣
⁣
Remember…⁣
⁣
Claiming exempt doesn’t eliminate your tax liability. It simply tells your employer not to withhold federal income tax from your paycheck.⁣
⁣
If you don’t actually qualify, the IRS could still expect those taxes when you file your return.⁣
⁣
Your tax preparer can not simply make your obligation 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳… 💨 ⁣
